Hi Peter
The NA have come back saying they couldn't find Ernest's IY service records,
so I will try and contact Kevin Asplin to see if he can help. I'll keep you
posted.
Best Regards
Richard

Thanks Peter - as you say, both complex and fascinating. However, your
reasoning looks good to me, but agree the Laing's Nek clasp seems a bit of
an aberration. Anyway, I have put in a record copying request to the NAs for
his IY service record and am waiting to get confirmation it's something they
can do. Once(if) I have the details, I'll let you know what they say. If
they can't do the copying, then I'll go to plan b.
Regarding the CIV papers at the Guildhall, I think they have a reasonable

Me again Richard.
Will you give me the names of the other men on the roll with D numbers so I
can check them against the C.I.V. name list that I have ?
Secondly, did you try to get copies of his Imperial Yeomanry service papers
? A researcher could look them up for you.
Regards
Peter

Re your message to the Boer War List. You don't need to have the full WO ref if applying to the Archives for a copy of his record.
However they charge #1 per minute for a search and state that the usual fee for a search in W097 for his service record is #60. As far as I am aware the fee is not reduced if the record is not found.
I research there regularly myself and my charge would be #20 for the search. If successful there is a further charge of #10 to copy the available record. Please note tha
Hi Karin - Sapper is a Royal Engineers rank equivalent
to private in an infantry regiment. The RE were
originally known as the Royal Sappers and Miners as
their main functions were orignally to dig mines and
saps.
They would undermine fortifications (e.g. when
besiegeing a city of a fortress) and detonate
explosives to bring part of the walls down. A sap is
an extension of a trench system, narrower than a
trench, dug at 90 degrees to a trench line towards the
enemy positions. Their purpose was to allow clo
Hallo List,
I have located my Grandfather on the 1901 Census in Infantry
Militia in Lancashire.
I have been in touch with the Regiment website and have been
told that he was 5089 Drummer W R TAYLOR of the 5th
Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and that he went to South
Africa and fought at Spion Kop Ladysmith in 1901/02.
Does anyone know the National Achieves WO Ref Numbers to
enable me to apply for any papers that may be applicable to
him.
Thank you,

Hi Peter
Kevin has come up trumps and located Ernest Gibson's IY service record.
He joined the 24th Battalion of the IY Metropolitan Mounted Rifles on the
13/2/1901 as a Private and was discharged (by his own request) on the
18/11/1901 as a Corporal. He was actually in South Africa from 12/4/1901 to
the 17/10/1901. It says he was awarded the QSA Medal with the three state
clasps we know about.
>From your information we know that he was previously with the CIV from
August 1900 until October 1900 (lea

Thanks for reply Richard - fascinating, and complicated.
None of those names appear on "The Official Roll of The City of London
Imperial Volunteers" as published in "The "City Press"" C.I.V. Souvenir
No.3" This list has c.1550 names. No date of publication but I guess March
1900.
I have another publication (only just recalled it ) PICKMAN'S PROGRESS which
in addtion to the same roll as above, has an extra list headed:

This list includes all of your D mens' names, and lists

There is a problem in delivering Boer War List posts to Listers who use one
particular ISP (addresses freeserve.co.uk, fsnet.co.uk, fsworld.co.uk,

Emails are being delayed for days. Subscribers are automatically
unsubscribed from the Boer List after three days delay. This has been a
problem for some time. It is becoming worse. A large number of subscribers
have recently been unsubscribed.
It is difficult to get to the root of this type of problem, but the fact

Peter,
#20 for a 2 minute search? My word..
I used Peter to find my Grandfather's and his cousins' Boer War and WW1
records and I was quite satisfied. However be prepared to receive copies of
charred papers if your ancestor's records happened to be in the area of the
Kew Buildings which were bombed in the WW2!!
