Hello List
I wonder if someone can help decipher a ships name from a recently acquired
first world war naval service record.
The period in question was from1916 to 1918, joining the ship on the 1st
February 1916 from Devonport (Vivid II)
It's very difficult to read but looks like Bexinger or Lexinger, certainly
the last letters are ...nger.
I'd be happy to send a copy to anyone off list who may be able to help, or
perhaps someone may know from the information given.
Any help would be greatly appreciate
Hi Carl,
I've searched for this ship and her essential Official Number.
As she has an unusual name I thought this would be easy, but, no success,
however, without any doubt, she will have had one, and you will need this
to positely identify her for records purposes.
I can find no records of her by name only at the usual archives and so,
being a relatively new ship, you might therefore try the Marine Coastguard

I am trying to find the crew list to the British ship Hazard. My greatgrandfather might have been aboard the ship. He deserted a British ship while in port at Honolulu. According to family stories he was part of the Royal Navy and was in Hawaii in 1848. Is there any way to find the crew besides visiting the National Archives? Thanks.
Is there any lister who may be able to supply me with information on the vessel "Marion Tatterson" which was located on the Dutton Locks site at http://www.duttonlocks.co.uk/shipsontheweaver.htm please? My interest is in reseach on the TATTERSON family and would appreciate any info on this vessel in particular its ownership and naming. Currently 200 miles from nearst library that has a Lloyds Register.

Hello Lister's,
I am hoping someone can do a search on the Register of Seamen BT 113. My GGgrandfather, Robert Bentham, born 5 Feb 1812 in Yarm Yorkshire, was a sailor/mariner/master mariner at least from the years 1838 to 1861. I have tried to access the microfilm from various sources here in Canada, but unfortunately with no success. From my understanding, these registers would give his physical description, so would really appreciate any help.
Thanking you for your time,

Hello, I am researchiing the life of my uncle William Henry Hogg. I have a copy of his Naval service record from the National Archives. On the top of the sheet it has Devonport 226686.B UnderB the section 'date and period of C S engagement' is written 7th May 1904-12 years. I took this to mean that that was when he signed up but under 'period of service' the first date is Northampton 9th June 03 to 15th Aug 03. The other periods of service are Cleopatra 18th Aug 03, and 9th Sept -2 Nov 03, Pembroke 3 Nov 03

Hello All
Many thanks for all the help and suggestions. Do lists of crew members
survive for particular ships that this could be cross referenced against?
"List and Number" on the service record was mentioned - as a novice looking
at naval service records can anyone enlighten me as to the relevance of
this. Also "Sub Ratings" given as G1 and R1?
In the "Character" column it states eg VG 31.12.12 Sat. What were the two
aspects of character referred to as very good and satisfactory?
Many thanks once again.
Hi again Rob,
Thoughts from an expert (Paul Benyon):
"Someone on the list has suggested Revenger, but I've not got a vessel
with that name in my database - to me it looks like ?evenge I - i.e.
ending in a Roman One. She must have been a fairly large vessel since
she appears to have been self-accounting rather than being a tender to
a larger vessel - his ship's book list and number is 5A2/29, rather
than 12/29 had she been a tender - and I'm wondering if she isn't an
armed merchant cruiser or something si
Hi Rob,
after chatting with Paul Benyon, I think it is safe to say your ship was
H.M.S. Revenge, commissioned on 1st. Feb 1916 (a coincidence of dates)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Revenge_(1915)
If you use google images you will find los of photos of ships with that
name,

My ancestor sailed as a seaman on the FANNY OF MONTROSE, a ship of

Try Portsmouth Naval Library - they have a net address or find copy of Janes

Margie,
If the ship was sailing to Greenland, she was most likely a whaler.
Basil Lubbock's book "Arctic Whalers" (Brown, Son and Ferguson,
Glasgow, 1937) records a whaler named Fanny which made voyages to
Greenland in the 1790s, but she seems to have been based at Hull, not
Montrose. Her master was Captain R. Taylor. I don't know what chance
there is that this is the same vessel, having changed her home port
since the 1780s.
But there is no mention of the Fanny in his account of whaling in the
