Allen is believed to be the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Broyles, daughter of Peter Broyles of Monroe Co., WV. Elizabeth married Robert Rains shortly after the birth of Allen. Allen was raised as a Rains but retained the name Broyles. At Robert's death in 1833 "Allen Broyles and Elizabeth Reins his mother" sell their share of some land in Monroe Co. along with other heirs. A possible clue to the identity of Allen's father is that Isabel Dunn gives permission for "her son" Allen Broyles's marriage in 1

Married Feb 16, 1836 in Monroe Co., WV. Children James Monroe; Malinda; Adaline; Lewis Simeon; Christopher; William Alexander; Andrew Jackson; Martha Elizabeth Aug 15, 1850; Mary Ellen; Sara D.;and Oliver Allen.
