Hi Joseph,
Thanks very much for your response. It's starting to look as though it is
unlikely that my roots spread anywhere outside the UK. I thought for a while
that we may have had Turkish origins but that, too, could not be
substantiated.Neighbouring Bulgaria seemed to be a possiblilty worth
chasing.
Regards
Bob

Hello list,
As part of my family history search, I would like to know if my surname -
MAMMATT - is to be found in Bulgaria.
A listing in a telephone directory would be all I need to know. Can anyone
help please?
Bob MAMMATT
Melbourne, Aus.

Hello David,
Thanks for your response.
I'm in Melbourne, Australia. Interestingly, all of the MAMMATTs in this
country are derived from my mother (Hessie) and father (George), who came
out here from the UK in the 1920's.
Regards,
Bob Mammatt.

Hi David,
Not sure about the "thousands of Mammatts" but I'm aware they were fairly
numerous. I think it is still regarded as an uncommon name.
Re the forenames - you are quite right -they are very English, as are those
of my family here in Australia. My parents were George and Hessie.
That said though, my grandfather's forename was Joseph and his grandfather's
forename was Moses - perhaps of no significance.
Thanks for your contribution.
Regards,
Bob

Bob,
Then you must realise that there are thousands of Mammatts here
predominately in the north of England.
I check the census taken in 1841 and there they were, but the interesting
thing is the christian names are very english, I was looking for a forename
that would give me a clue as to the ethnic origins ie. slav, arabian, jewish
etc. but no joy. Even the LDS has no record of Mammatts outside England.
