Dear List,
Does anybody know where the very first cemetery in Hobart is? That is, where the first inhabitants were buried?
I have an ancestors cousin or brother, not sure which yet, that died in Hobart in 1814. He was James Don Butler, alias "Captain Fearnought", a convict who arrived in Australia aboard the Marquise Cornwallis in 1796. I have been gathering information on him since I first discovered his existence several months ago and would like to know if his burying place has been preserved. I

During World War 1 and World War 2, Australians were fiercely patriotic.
This can best be described in the words, my country - right or wrong. The
wives, mothers and girlfriends were concerned for the nutritional value of
the food being supplied to their men. Here was a problem. Any food they
sent to the fighting men had to be carried in the ships of the Merchant Navy.
Most of these were lucky to maintain a speed of ten knots (18.5 kilometres
per hour). Most had no refrigerated facili
Hi Butler List
I am researching the family of James and Jane RODFORD of Morpeth NSW.
Their daughter Elizabeth RODFORD, born 1845, Martock Somerset, UK, married
William J BUTLER in Morpeth in 1867.
Their children were Emily, Annie, Herbert, Florence, Edward, Martha, Arthur,
Samuel, Ellen, Margaret, and Charlotte.
I don't any other info on William.
We have traced descendents of the other RODFORD daughters, Annie, Sarah and
Mary Anne and would love to complete the family circle.

Have been curious as to why in the early years so many babies have their cause of death recorded as from "convulsions". The following article gives a clue as what was a probable cause.

Hi all,
Ed Butler's question about James Don Butler who arrived as a convict 1796 prompts me to share some information I only recently discovered.
NSW Records, previously known as NSW Archives, has a site that provides magnificent information about people who had dealings with government between 1788 and 1825. The Colonial Secretary was involved in all sorts of matters, convicts applying for permission to marry, people wanting denization so they could buy land, applications for tickets of leave, applicati

Hi all,
Just thought that I would post a few guidelines for the list to make you all aware of them.
Firstly, despite what some mailing list administrators feel about their lists, I DO NOT have a problem with discussion on the following:
1. Virus alerts (after just having been infected, I think this is a really good idea)
2. General discussion on topics OTHER than family history
3. General computer and family history help
4. Advice of useful computer and family history links
5. General history events (eg

Dear List,
I was thinking that we Butler descendants should be a little more vocal
as well. Although I have no ancestors in Australia, the fact still remains
that I may have some brothers or cousins of ancestors making their home in
Australia. My active interest in Australia is a brother or cousin of my
ancestor that was transported to Australia and arrived in 1796. By no later
than 1807 he was in Hobart and died there in 1814 with some grants of land
given to him in 1813. His name was James Don Butler

HI all,
I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but here in Hobart it is a very rainy and cold Sunday.
Just the kind of day that makes you want to start inside and keep warm.
I thought that this may be a good opportunity for all the new listers to post their interests so that we all know exactly who you are researching and who knows???? Some of us may be lucky enough to find new connections and cousins!!!
So what do you say?
Will you help me get this list moving a little more?
Hope to hea
Hi all,
I gathered this information to answer a query on another list and thought it may be useful to some of you.
The Southern Regional Cemetary Trust maintains both the Cornelian Bay Cemetary and the Kingston Cemetary in Hobart.
I found out that the Cornelian Bay Cemetary started in 1878.
Prior to that, there had been a cemetary at Queenborough in Sandy Bay, as well as various church cemetaries.
This cemetary at Queenborough was changed into a park or something and many of the headstones were moved

In response to Catherine's request for a "roll call" here is my list. I have included those about whom I know details in case others are looking for them - as well as some about whom I will appreciate information. I have also included their wives.
Later, I will send individual requests that will include more information in the hope that it helps you to identify people.
Some indication of family groups is indicated by different type faces and spaces.

Just a note to alert listers with interests in Scotland 1881 and 1891
that the Scots Origins database service ( < TARGET="_blank">http://www.origins.net/> ) has
advised that it has added new data from the 1881 and 1891 census (of
Scotland) - including images of 1891 census returns. Go to the above
site and click on "Whats new" - I suspect the site may be a bit busy,
initially.
