1. [BYGONES-USERS] Scans DB [1]
Hi -- I'm having another issue with the scans. From the extract, I can click on the "View Scans" button and get the screen for the document scan for that extract. I used to be able to right click on that screen and the insert dialog would come up. Now, when I right click on that screen, *most* of the time nothing happens. I haven't been able to figure out why sometimes it will come up and sometimes it won't. From there, if I click on "Open Scans DB" I can click on "Add New Document Scan" and
2. [BYGONES-USERS] Opening an old .BYG file [1]
Hello, My first post. I have a number of files which I believe were made with Bygones 9c. I have been able to recover most of them but some, particularly Sources.BYG and Contacts.BYG, seem not to be amenable to the 'Recover Damaged File' utility. I get a message that says that the file does not "seem to be FileMaker Pro 5.0 - 5.5 file". Has any one met and found a solution to this problem? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. 3. [BYGONES-USERS] PDF Research Logs [1]
No problem at all--that is what the list is for! A big thanks to everyone else who also helps each other out though--I appreciate that. Off list, a person who uses Bygones for a correspondent genealogy course over the internet inquired about the best way to email others research logs from Bygones. One inexpensive solution I like for Windows users is to use pdf995. It can be downloaded from http://www.pdf995.com/ You can use it for free with advertisements, or pay $9.95 to use it w/out advertisement
4. [BYGONES-USERS] Transferring data from an old Bygones database [1]
Bygones .9c used a FileMaker Pro Runtime 4.0 database; .9d uses FileMaker Pro Runtime 5.5. So, the file format of the databases is different. So, to use the data in the old 9c databases, with the 9d databases, you should "import" the data from the old databases, into a new/.9d copy of the database. You can either (1) do that one database at a time, using the "Import Records" command from in the "File" menu. Or (2) you could import set of Bygones databases together, by going to a Research database, g

Does bygones work with Windows Vista?
7. [Bygones] Doc File Table of Contents [1]
On 10 Nov Steven discussed the Doc File Table of Contents that creates a table of contents for the document files for those of us that keep our research & docs separate. This sounds like an extremely useful thing. Would someone tell me how or where to find this Doc File Table of Contents? Thanks, Ann in New Mexico

9. [Bygones] Source #'s [1]
Anne- It would be easy to redo numbers in TMG. How are you handling yours? Do you keep source #'s and document #'s the same TMG/BG? I was thinking of cross referencing the numbers for individuals. I can see the individual numbers growing at a faster clip in Bygones then in TMG- since your are likely to have more unlinked people in a surname/locality scenario. So it would probably be best to cross reference there. But I would think that you could match the source/document #'s. Thanks for your input!
10. Re: [Bygones] printing labels [1]
Jeannette wrote: >I would like a label choice that had both the full document file name and >number and the associated extract file name and number on it. Is that >possible? Hi Jeannette, Well, the idea behind the "document labels" in Bygones is that the label will have: 1) A reference to the place in a researcher's files where a document belongs; and 2) The source citation. As you know, the reference to the files uses (a) the name of the file that the document is to be filed in, plus (b) a number
11. [Bygones] Sorting- thanks! [1]
Troy- You are so nice to take the time to explain all of this, and everything that comes up... Your time and efforts are very appreciated. Thank-you! Have a nice Thanksgiving everybody! Sydney
12. [Bygones] Sorting [1]
Hi I just tried to sort my people db by alt. ID #, in order to print out a list. What I ended up with was this: ...1.3 10.0 11.0 11.0+ 11.1 1101+:2 12.0 12.1 13.0 14.0 15.0 16.0 17.0 2.0 2.2... This is an William Dollarhide modified ahnentafel numbering system. I have TMG#s as ID, and the Dollarhide system as alt ID Bygones recognizes 1.0 & 1.0+ as the same number- although they sort ok, it seemed best to use as Alt #. Is there a way to get this to sort in order- i.e.- 1.0, 1.1, ... 2.0, 2.1... Than

Elizabeth: Even information you personally find in a book, or a document, or chiseled in stone can be wrong. You can drive yourself crazy trying to re-verify every single bit of information you obtain from others. I have had the good fortune of finding surname cousins in several branches of my family who, like myself, have spent years of research into our shared lines. When they sent their GEDCOMS, they backed them up by mailing me photocopies of many of the book pages or documents cited in their work

Sydney wrote: >Another question (of course) > >As a new user, would it be best to keep everything (except doc file I guess) >in landscape, so that there would be no conflicts in printing? > >Thanks >Sydney Hi Sydney, The majority of the layouts in Bygones are still set up for "portrait" printing. So, for people who use the "landscape" research extract layouts, they will have to keep changing their printer settings from portrait to landscape and visa versa. So, actually, it would be easiest to try to
15. Re: [Bygones] printing labels [1]
Well Jeannette, Although the (1) Research Log, and for those who file their documents by "document files," the (2) Document File Table of Contents layouts can be used and viewed on a computer, they are also meant to be printed for your paper files, so that you do have a paper copy of that information. I love my computers when they are working, but I've had my share of bad disks and computer problems, and I also have some disks in my closet that my computers can no longer read (5-1/4 floppies, single
16. Re: [Bygones] Census Databases [1]
Hi Lewis, I will try to post some U.S. templates soon on the "sharing" web page, that you will be able to download and import into your Sources database. I think you can make some decent ones now if you use the landscape layouts in the Sources and Research databases. You may already know how "text templates" for various sources are set up in Bygones, but to review the concepts and issues related to setting them up: 1) In Bygones, all source extracts are made in the same database (the Research DB),
17. [Bygones] Where Do I Start / Clooz [1]
I downloaded the program and have read the manual as best I could. Could someone just walk me through how to enter one document? Perhaps an example of a birth certificate? Also, while I like what this program can do, I also have been using Clooz. Does this duplicate / complicate my life??? Thanks! I sure appreciate the help from experienced users. Peg
18. Re: [Bygones] Source #'s [1]
I think I missed the original question but here's how I'm handling it: I don't have any cross-referencing of sources between TMG & Bygones, in fact I now use TMG very little except for charts. 'New' people going into TMG have Bygones in the reference field & I know to look in Bygones for the sources, I enter only enough details in TMG to print on the charts. Every person in the Bygones People DB has as an ID: " TMG# ....", the number being the one TMG automatically gave them, so they do need to go in TMG
19. [Bygones] global changes? [1]
Hi I hate to keep asking stupid questions- but before I start entering a lot data, I want to make sure I understand how things work, and make sure my file set up is logical. I have downloaded source templates from the web site. After loading- I decided to delete the landscape source templates since I decided to go with the portrait format. After I did this, I had 40 source records in the source database of my current data set . At this point, I went back and looked at copies of the research folder- thin
20. Re: [Bygones] Doc File Table of Contents [1]
Hi Ann, To view and print some data entered in your Research database as a "Document File Table of Contents," you need to switch to the "Doc File Table of Contents" layout in the Research database. You switch to that layout via the layout popup menu in the upper left hand corner of the gray "status area" on the left of your window. If you can not see the gray "status area" on the left, you will need to toggle it on by clicking on the "status area control" icon in the bottom left hand area of your w
21. Re: [Bygones] printing labels [1]
Maybe I'm not just totally weaned from a paper system to a computer system. I have visions of somehow losing my computer log and having to redo all the paper files. I guess I really want the double pointing for backup. I sure it's not genuinely necessary. It just feels safer. 22. Re: [Bygones] global changes? [1]
Hi Sydney, I'm not sure this is what you are describing; but what should happen is: The Sources database is one of the "common" databases that you should only have one copy of. The Research Folders contain databases that you can make multiple copies of--but you should do that by making a copy of a whole Research Folder with all the databases in it. When you edit something in the Sources database, it should not change any DATA in any other database. However, it will change what appears in the pop-u
23. [Bygones] Census Templates Posted [1]
I just posted some Sources database records with "text templates" for the 1790-1920 U.S. Censuses on the Bygones Users Database Sharing web page at: http://home.utah-inter.net/bygones/shared.htm They are set up to be used with the "landscape" layouts in the Sources and Research databases. If you use them with a "portrait" research extract layout, the headings for the censuses will not all fit on one line of text. They are in the "Sourc003.byg" file. Anyone interested in checking them out can downloa

25. [Bygones] Scans [1]
Help...My scans won't add to the database. I added 2 successfully under 9b. Then I upgraded to 9c. Since then I have tried to add a scanned copy of a birth registration and an adoption court record. Neither could be added to the database. I used gif, jpeg and pcx format. My original program is Paintshop Pro, the same one I used to scan the diploma and transcript I already have in the database. Then I tried adding it to the pictures database. The program said something about a filter. What did I d
