I think the safety warning signs in subway cars are mostly pictograms now.
A sign like that would have been at the ends of the cars, just outside the
conductor/motorman (er... train operator) cabs. BTW -- the newer trains
don't all have such cabs. The ones that do, have full width cabs -- the
conductor no longer needs to switch cars to open doors on the opposite
side of the train. The MTA has also been testing a new train on the #2
White Plains Road line. Among the features: fully electronic signs and
On the subject of bizarre lawsuits...
The tree that fell on a bus full of school kids was reported to the city
as overgrown and in need of a trim. Additionally, the bus was not a
traditional yellow school bus. It was a passenger van that lacked much of
the reinforcements used in official school vehicles.
There was a story that made the network news just this morning -- a near
riot at Rikers Island (which is part of Bronx County) and the DA referring
to it as a scam to create a bogus lawsuit. Sorry, that
Still no word if Yankee Stadium is safe enough to reopen on Friday.
Repairs to the broken beam are well under way, and an army of about 300
city building inspectors are poking holes into the the ceilings, checking
on the condition of other beams.
Wednesday's game has been relocated to Shea. First pitch has been moved
up to 12:30 and the Yanks must be off the field no later than 4:30. Seems
like a logistical nightmare is in the works with Yankee fans leaving, Mets
fans arriving and all of it at rush hour.
Well, almost...
A 500 pound support beam came crashing through the ceiling over the lodge
area at Yankee Stadium this afternoon, just hours before the start of
tonight's game. It was fortunate that the stadium was empty at the time,
as the beam fell directly onto front row seats in that section.
Tonight's came was called due to "Technical Difficulties" and the next
game will also be postponed. The city (owner of the stadium) will repair
the damage and will send a team of building inspectors to check on
The story that ran locally had the following paragraph to explain the
fine:
The parks department said bicycle chains can damage the bark of a
tree, making it more susceptible to falling on a passerby in a
storm.
Damage "can" be possible, implying there was none in this case, hence the
waiving of the fine.

After the Yanks fifth straight win came some shocking news...
Tonight's game was called on account of "Technical Difficulties" but now
the announcement came out that the stadium has severe structural problems
and will remain closed until further notice. The Yankees are working on a

A few random notes...
Opening Day II at Yankee Stadium -- George sat through part of the game,
as promised, in the very seat under the beam that fell. Jay Leno had a
few jokes to tell about the entire story.
It seems as if the Mets will be getting their new stadium, with a targeted
"move-in" date of 2002. Among the features: a retractable roof and a
playing field that 'rolls' out of the way for other events. To top it all
off,
Well, the inspectors are only partially through their work and though they
have not yet found any serious damage, there is enough to keep the stadium
closed for more than a week. This means that there will be no 75th
anniversary event at the stadium. The 'beam' that came loose (now
referred to as an "expansion joint" connecting other beams) did
considerable damage, crushing one seat, damaged an entire row and created
a six inch hole in the concrete floor. Steinbrenner himself vowed to sit

Guiliani again stated that he would like to keep the Yanks in da Bronx,
but at the same time offered a proposal to build a "new" Yankee Stadium
over the west side rail yards in Manhattan. (He also suggested rebuilding
the current stadium and perhaps another alternative as well.) The money
would come out of a fund that was about to reduce commercial property
taxes.

In an ongoing effort to make NYC a better place, the Mayor decided that we
should be driving no faster than 15 miles per hour in some areas of the
city. Trouble is, the Mayor does not have the authority to reduce the
speed limit to such a low level without the State's OK.

Greetings all,

A local merchant was given a $1,000 fine for leaving his delivery bike
outside the store. No, not because it was on the sidewalk, but because
it was chained to a tree. No damage to the tree -- just a chain looped
around it and the bike.
But then Parks Commissioner Henry Stern said that the fine would be

Fordham University recently won a court dispute regarding their half-built
radio tower. The Botanical Garden has made every attempt to halt
construction calling it an eyesore and a danger to wildlife. It is now up
to the FCC to decide. At the very least, the tower will need to be
dismantled and rebuilt about 30 feet from its present location (at the
very edge of the FU Campus, just across from the conservatory) to comply
with City building codes. At 550+ feet, it will be the tallest structure

I was about 7 years old when my father took me to the Yankee Stadium. We lived
at 1060 Sheridan Ave, in walking distance of the ball park. We used to hear
the roar of the crowd from there to our block whenever an important play was
made. Anyway while sitting in the park enjoying my hot dog, my father said,
"see this guy. he's going to hit a home run".
I watched and saw this ballpayer hit a home run and I thought my father was
the smartest guy in the world. How could he know such a thing? It was years

well), but we got divorced and that was the end of my mother's driving
