Greetings all,
I took a walk today around one of my old neighborhoods -- Allerton Ave
and White Plains Road. I was so disappointed in seeing how dirty and
noisy it was. It was so sad to know that residents have little respect
for one another there -- litter everywhere and boom boxes/car stereos
blaring. Sorry to say that the Bronx seems to be deteriorating away, more
and more of it every time I look.
Sorry be be so 'down' on the boro I've loved so much, but the sudden rash

Hi all,
On the Front page of today's News is the continuing saga of the restaurant
inspections. One spot in the Bronx had violations so bad, inspectors
called in the police to shut it down pronto.
The establishment was open, despite the fact that there was no electricity
and dairy products were measured to have a temperature of 102 degrees, and
the dead vermin on the floor. Ugh...!!!
Speaking of dining... a few weeks ago, the mayor's office attempted to
make reservations at Josepina in Riverdale, but
Greetings all,
I was looking for the article I was alluding to earlier when I mentioned
the alleged war between the boroughs. Here it is:
http://www.nydailynews.com/archive/98_06/061698/city_lif/60635.htm
It includes a bit of history, according to the New York Daily News, along
with the argument of who pours what first.

Yes and no. The parade of ships and the tv coverage is set for the 4th,
but Op Sail has already started in the Baltimore area. It officially
sails into the NYC area on the 3rd and will remain through Sunday the 9th
as it then moves north to Connecticut. Coverage on Tuesday will be a

Hi all,
Regarding the egg cream in a bottle...
I tasted one of those. I thought it was better than a can of soda, which
was my other option at the time. But I noticed someone wrote that it was
the Brooklyn formula! (It's the old war of which ingredients are mixed
first.)
I read that the Fox News Channel will offer live national coverage of
OpSail starting at about 10am eastern, and the Weather Channel will also
offer some coverage as well. Some more sites of interest...

I think you could be referring to Blauvelt, which means blue fields in Dutch. Blauvelt is in Rockland County, NY. There were orphanages there. Check the Catholic Directory for address; I suspect the Catholic Directory is available for reference at local parish levels.

Hi all,
Maureen, I too enjoyed reading about your trip back to the Bronx. I just
thought I would clarify a few minor details...
I agree with our other loyal Bronx reader that 'gypsy' cabs are not the
same as those that operate with a 'home base' that takes requests by phone
and dispatches those to drivers. Gypsy cabs are the ones that cruise the
streets looking for anyone hailing them. In NYC, only yellow cabs are
allowed to accept street hails. It seems, however, that city officials
have come to acc

Hi all,
I mentioned that the DMV moved to the old Dick Gidron Cadillac dealership
building on Fordham months ago. It's a rather plain-looking building now.
Someone suggested if it might be 'Traffic Court' but, as far as I know,
that is still near Westchester Square. [BTW -- I have heard that the
dealership's new building was destroyed in a fire, but they are
rebuilding.]

Hi all,
Seems as if no one liked the spelling, whichever way it was... This area
was originally named after Jan Throckmorton who settled on a Dutch
province in 1642. Variations of the spelling include: Throckmorton's
Neck, Throgmorton's Neck, Throgsneck (note: no space), Throggs Neck and
ultimately, Throgs Neck.

In addition to the message I sent to you privately today, I thought you

in New York.
The New York Daily News printed an interview with Mayor Michael Schroeren,
regarding the 6 couples, a child, three town officials and a dozen others
from Moenchengladbach on the flight.
It also mentions how workers at a furniture store operated by one of the
victims closed the business and put up a sign that the store was closed

Hi all,
A three alarm fire destroyed a row of stores in the Mount Eden area this
morning, and now fire officials are looking for the cause as it grew
quickly, raising questions about how it started. Firefighters think it
began in a supermarket and spread to four other stores, gutting all of the
businesses. 'We decided it may be a suspicious fire pretty quickly due to
the amount of fire and smoke on arrival,' said Chief Burns. [What a name
for a fire department employee.]
The fire was out within 3 hou

Greetings all,
In the news today are the efforts made to place NYC's birth and death
records into a database. Officials report that spot checks revealed that
some people died before they were born and that some men were pregnant.
The city promised not only to make those corrections, but to modify the
software to eliminate the possibility of any other errors like these.
I do not have any other details about the database, but will certainly
pass them along as I get them.
Happy 4th! For those of you who
