1. Notes from the Bronx... [1]
Greetings all, I took a walk today around one of my old neighborhoods -- Allerton Ave and White Plains Road. I was so disappointed in seeing how dirty and noisy it was. It was so sad to know that residents have little respect for one another there -- litter everywhere and boom boxes/car stereos blaring. Sorry to say that the Bronx seems to be deteriorating away, more and more of it every time I look. Sorry be be so 'down' on the boro I've loved so much, but the sudden rash of stories about crime takin

Four people, including three teenagers, were shot in or near Alfred E. Smith High School in the south Bronx this afternoon. Details on this and other Bronx news to follow... Marc Links to the Bronx: http://www.angelfire.com/ny/Bx
3. Dirty dining; various replies... [1]
Hi all, On the Front page of today's News is the continuing saga of the restaurant inspections. One spot in the Bronx had violations so bad, inspectors called in the police to shut it down pronto. The establishment was open, despite the fact that there was no electricity and dairy products were measured to have a temperature of 102 degrees, and the dead vermin on the floor. Ugh...!!! Speaking of dining... a few weeks ago, the mayor's office attempted to make reservations at Josepina in Riverdale, but
4. Egg cream history & which goes first... [1]
Greetings all, I was looking for the article I was alluding to earlier when I mentioned the alleged war between the boroughs. Here it is: http://www.nydailynews.com/archive/98_06/061698/city_lif/60635.htm It includes a bit of history, according to the New York Daily News, along with the argument of who pours what first. Greetings all, ---- GenieElle@aol.com wrote: > I was reading your post about happenings and have a question. I am > assuming the "OP SAIL" is on the actual 4th, correct? Yes and no. The parade of ships and the tv coverage is set for the 4th, but Op Sail has already started in the Baltimore area. It officially sails into the NYC area on the 3rd and will remain through Sunday the 9th as it then moves north to Connecticut. Coverage on Tuesday will be a collaborative effort by WNET Thirteen and Newschanne
7. Egg cream; OpSail [1]
Hi all, Regarding the egg cream in a bottle... I tasted one of those. I thought it was better than a can of soda, which was my other option at the time. But I noticed someone wrote that it was the Brooklyn formula! (It's the old war of which ingredients are mixed first.) I read that the Fox News Channel will offer live national coverage of OpSail starting at about 10am eastern, and the Weather Channel will also offer some coverage as well. Some more sites of interest... http://www.inr2000.navy.mil/
8. Re: gypsy cabs, transit cops, Throggs/Throgs Neck [1]
I think you could be referring to Blauvelt, which means blue fields in Dutch. Blauvelt is in Rockland County, NY. There were orphanages there. Check the Catholic Directory for address; I suspect the Catholic Directory is available for reference at local parish levels.
9. Subway maps [1]
Hi all, I just saw a few old subway maps at: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/caption.pl?/maps/historical/irt-1920.gif http://www.nycsubway.org/maps/historical/1951_a.jpg http://www.nycsubway.org/maps/historical/irtmap.jpg (Scroll right) that have two interesting items... A terminal on the 2/5 line at Bronx Park [One of the turns south of 180th Street has a massive support structure appended to it, and I often wondered what it was. The map also indicates a rail yard at West Farms in addition to the yard
10. Gypsy cabs, transit police, Rudy... [1]
Hi all, Maureen, I too enjoyed reading about your trip back to the Bronx. I just thought I would clarify a few minor details... I agree with our other loyal Bronx reader that 'gypsy' cabs are not the same as those that operate with a 'home base' that takes requests by phone and dispatches those to drivers. Gypsy cabs are the ones that cruise the streets looking for anyone hailing them. In NYC, only yellow cabs are allowed to accept street hails. It seems, however, that city officials have come to acc
11. Notes from the Bronx, a correction... [1]
Hi all, In my haste, I misstated a fact... The three town officials and about a dozen others were booked on that vacation package, but took other flights. In news from the Bronx... It's three strikes against Strawberry -- does this mean he's out? The bidding process for public schools has begun - private firms wish to transform failing schools into private establishments. Can a business or a government better instruct students? The Bloods and Crips gangs have begun terrorizing merchants along White
12. Notes from the Bronx - various replies... [1]
Hi all, I mentioned that the DMV moved to the old Dick Gidron Cadillac dealership building on Fordham months ago. It's a rather plain-looking building now. Someone suggested if it might be 'Traffic Court' but, as far as I know, that is still near Westchester Square. [BTW -- I have heard that the dealership's new building was destroyed in a fire, but they are rebuilding.] Louis -- do tell us the stories you mentioned! They sound interesting, and it is great that you can look back on those experiences a
13. Throgs/Throggs Neck; Longfellow Ave Park [1]
Hi all, Seems as if no one liked the spelling, whichever way it was... This area was originally named after Jan Throckmorton who settled on a Dutch province in 1642. Variations of the spelling include: Throckmorton's Neck, Throgmorton's Neck, Throgsneck (note: no space), Throggs Neck and ultimately, Throgs Neck. The empty lot at Longfellow Avenue between 173/174th Streets was once a dumping ground after it was declared 'undevelopable' due to a large formation of rocks. Turning lemons into lemon aid
14. Moenchengladbach on the front page of NY papers [1]
Udo, In addition to the message I sent to you privately today, I thought you and a few others would be interested in the coverage of the tragedy here in New York. The New York Daily News printed an interview with Mayor Michael Schroeren, regarding the 6 couples, a child, three town officials and a dozen others from Moenchengladbach on the flight. It also mentions how workers at a furniture store operated by one of the victims closed the business and put up a sign that the store was closed for 'family r

Greetings all, WES wrote in response to my message about hospital records... >Thanks. Would you have any names of persons, who could or would help? No, sorry. But I am not even sure what you are asking. Help with...? Gas prices were a hot topic here a while ago. Now you can check various prices online. 16. Fire in Mt Eden, Woodlawn, etc... [1]
Hi all, A three alarm fire destroyed a row of stores in the Mount Eden area this morning, and now fire officials are looking for the cause as it grew quickly, raising questions about how it started. Firefighters think it began in a supermarket and spread to four other stores, gutting all of the businesses. 'We decided it may be a suspicious fire pretty quickly due to the amount of fire and smoke on arrival,' said Chief Burns. [What a name for a fire department employee.] The fire was out within 3 hou
17. Rats, PS/JHS site... [1]
Hi all, The super of a south Bronx building has been trying to put an end to the rat problem around the building, but he claims that the city is not offering any cooperation to combat the problem. College alum can be found through alumni.net High School alum may be located through classmates.com and now (if you can remember even further back -- I can't!), there's http://www.asd.com Not involving the Bronx, but... 18. Only in NY... [1]
Greetings all, In the news today are the efforts made to place NYC's birth and death records into a database. Officials report that spot checks revealed that some people died before they were born and that some men were pregnant. The city promised not only to make those corrections, but to modify the software to eliminate the possibility of any other errors like these. I do not have any other details about the database, but will certainly pass them along as I get them. Happy 4th! For those of you who
