If the death was in 1977 - I believe the Amador Ledger, Amador Dispatch and Ione-Progress News were active newspapers then. BUT a lot of the Amador deaths were also posted to the Sacramento Bee at the request of the families.

The 1927 History of Amador Co was put together by the Amador Co. Women's Clubs and is basically interviews of old-timers about the old timers. There is no mention of a Gilchrist in the book but there is this one entry concerning the name of Leach:

great-great-grandfather, Reuben Miller Dillon, died in Plymouth,
Amador County, California on March 7, 1899. He is buried
in Shenandoah Valley Cemetery near Plymouth in Amador
