1. [CAButte] Plat Maps [1]
I have recently been fortunate to receive five packets of Homestead papers from Nat'l. Archives. All are in Butte County, most in area of Cohasset. The earliest claim filed is 1874, the latest proved is 1909. My question is: must I make the (at best) 10 hour drive to Oroville to the county offices in order to get maps to help me locate these homesteads? Is there a way to get plat maps from these years or what types of maps should I be asking for? Do you think that the Paradise Genealogical Socie

Margaret, Perhaps this information will be helpful to you in locating homesteads: 1) Metsker county maps seem to be very highly regarded for identifying township locations: http://www.metskermaps.com/ You can order these by phone. I found the company very helpful and service was fast. (I don't work for them or benefit in any way from saying this.) 2) The initial point for the Mount Diablo Meridian (that is, where the North-South meridian line and the East-West baseline intersect) is on Mount Diab

12. [CABUTTE] Look up requests from new books [1]
Hi Group: I got a lot of response to my offer to do look ups. I will get back to each and every one of you. I will look up your people in all of my books and be as thorough as possible. I should get back to all of you before the end of this weekend. A little about my home resources. I looked at the cemeteries, and what the other look up volunteers were offering to do look ups on. I then began my endeavor to fill the gaps. I have a long way to go. I focus on the time period before 1905, but have

16. [CABUTTE] Re: Saul Rugh and family, Butte Co., CA [1]
Anabel: The Cemetery Saul Rugh and his descendants are buried in is in Butte Co. CA. This was a mining area during the Gold Rush, and I assume that is what brought him here. I didn't find him during the 1860 Census, but I'm sure lots of the miners were missed. There was no 1850 census that I know of for this area. The cemetery itself is called Nimshew Cemetery. It is very isolated, in fact I wasn't sure I could get in there in my Beetle. I was warned about the person who lives near it, 'don't ge

19. Horner's in Chico 1884 [1]
I am posting this info sent to me from Donna for other Horner's to note. We know that FC and JW are ours but we have always wondered about Thomas' middle name. We have it has Burton in some places, but if these three registered to vote at the same time, I would think they were all family. This is the first we knew of Thomas' wife and daughter. We do know that some of our Horner's are in the Chico Cemetery ( The parents of these boys, Sarah E. and Samuel J. Horner) and F.C. is buried somewhere in Yuba C
