As a general help, the Contra Costa Library catalog is searchable online at
http://www.contra-costa.lib.ca.us/
The genealogy section (Heritage Collection) is not searchable separately
although you can enter keyword "genealogy" and get a list of 1500+ books.
The Diablo Valley College library catalog is searchable online at
http://www.dvc.edu/library/default.htm
I work at DVC (not in the library) and can do occasional lookups in specific
books if you find something in a catalog search.

Surname: GARDNER

I found an obituary in the Contra Costa Times which I will scan and send
to your email. His name also appears in the California Death Index, available
on Rootsweb.
It's my understanding (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that Contra
Costa won't let people look at the death records; if you want a death certificate
you need to order a certified copy. I
Good source of Contra Costa County Central telephone books

Just FYI: DVC doesn't have much, and they are currently in the middle of a
library facilities construction project that leaves them with very little
room.
The Contra Costa Main Library in Pleasant Hill has a Heritage Room for
genealogy. I would check with the librarians at that branch first for
directories, and perhaps go on a day when there is a docent in the Heritage
Room to see what might be in that collection as well. (I don't know
personally what is there.)
