My great-great-grandfather Norman Francis Bates died in Los Angeles October
16, 1915. Family tradition has it that he was run over by a streetcar. I
don't know how to go about researching this in the newspapers of the time.
It seems likely such an event would have been mentioned in the newspaper.
Also, perhaps there was an obituary (although no one in the family has a
copy). Does anyone have ideas on how I could research this from out of
state?
Thank you for any suggestions!

You have a little bit of a possible advantage because
Judd is not a terribly common first name.
What I would do is to search the 1930 census of L.A.
County on Ancestry for the first name Judd, leaving the
surname blank. I'd start searching for any first name Judd
(or Jud), last name left blank, born in New York, and look
for one with a likely age, then go the the detailed entry
and see if wife May/Mae is there with him. If that fails,
try leaving out the birth place and try again. If that
Is there anyone on this list that could check a marriage

All help appreciated.

I wish to thank everyone who wrote saying such lovely things about my poem, "My Ancestor Grandmother", and especially to those asking if they could share it with other groups. I am very honored.

Hello,
I would like to connect with others searching the BARBER surname.
My gr. grandfather's name was Edward B. BARBER b. May 22, 1880 NY. The information I know is that he had 2 children in a previous marriage (Lois 1906 b. NY and Jack 1909 b. TX) before divorcing their mother Alice KNAPP. Edward apparently moved from OR to CA, remarried and had more children. Edward would've moved to CA in the year 1914 or later.
I've located an Edward Burton BARBER b. May 22, 1880 NY d. Jan. 13, 1949 in Los Angeles,
Hi Joy. They don't have an email address but are very willing to provide
information by phone (if you have just a couple of lookups) or by mail (if

The name of the cemetery today is Pierce Bros. Valhalla Memorial Park.
Interesting thing is, the LDS has microfilmed the records of this cemetery.

Andrea,
I did a quick check on the dates you gave and nothing came up in the L.A. Times. Double check the location of the death, and the date, of course. After you have the full documentation, there are a couple of us who can look up an obit.

Hello Judy and Susan:
Judy:
I will send the image to your personal e-mail.
Susan:
I can tell you how to e-mail census images from Ancestry. However, I
would like to mention that I never send an image to someone without also
transcribing the image information (such as you have) to the mailing
list the request originated from. That way, the info ends up in the
mailing list archives for others.
I don't know how you are attempting it, but it sounds as though you are
attempting to send the census "page

Hi Judy,
If I knew how to send a jed com, it would be easy! Unfortunately, that is
not something I have learned how to do. If you can explain how, I will give it
a try! In the past I have tried to send a census page "in" an email - it
doesn't work - ancestry has some magic that won't allow that!
Here's more from the census that might help. I also looked in 1920 just in
case, but neither Allen or Clausen showed up in California. Would he be in
another state? I could check for you.

You do not need a certificate of identity, because you do not need a certified copy. Some people get scared by that--don't be. I am ordering a DCT this weekend, and will track how long it takes and share that with the group. I am no relation to the person--he is a police officer killed in the 1930's who I want to get recognized in the offical memorial in Sacramento.

Hi I am a new subscriber to this list.
I am just about to embark on the first of my American ELMS line. I have
tracked my ELMS family from Surrey in England to both Australia where I am
from and to Canada, now at least one member of the Canadian family moved to
California where at least 3 of his sons lived. One died in Los Angles and I
am wondering if there are any contacts out there who know of descendants of
this Elms?

My great-grandfather died in Los Angeles in 1951. I have his death
certificate and it states he was buried in Graceland Cemetery. It does
not state where the cemetery is located.
The mortuary was Pierce Brothers Monterey Park. I find no listing for
the mortuary. Does anyone know who has their records?
Thank you

Hi, Deborah, Joe, and the list,
Thank you for your efforts on my behalf! This weekend I was in Glendale for
the dedication of a veteran's grave marker for Norman Bates (he was buried
in 1915 in an unmarked grave at Forest Lawn and as a Civil War veteran, not
to mention recipient of the Medal of Honor, was due a veteran's marker which
we got the VA to provide and place). The service included a committal by
the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a drum and fife corps, a color
guard, and a firing squa
