Of what material did they make horse troughs in the days of horse-drawn stages, say 1880 to 1900 or so? I'm thinking of the area from Raymond to Wawona especially, where they changed horses often. Were they wooden? I think if they were metal they would have to be shipped on the railroads. Do you think any were made of cement and rocks? Zelda Dubel, Fresno, CA.

I believe they were made of wood. When filled the wood swells and that's why the water stayed in the troughs. If they were allowed to dry out, all they had to do was refill it and keep it filled until the wood became swollen again. I'm not an expert, but that's my take.
