I knew John Van Riper in the 1970s, when I lived in Surprise Valley, He was
a nice older gentleman who was living in Gerlach at the time. It was said
that he had suffered from shell shock from being in the war in World War I.
It is interesting to pick up pieces of informatin regarding acquaintances

time to transcribe all of these tidbits.

the Savannah Pioneer Cemetery and Savannah Memorial Park, in the City of
Rosemead, Los Angeles County.
The El Monte Cemetery Association is apparently experiencing financial

were to occur, it has been stated that the 3,000 graves in the cemetery will
have to be disinterred and relocated elsewhere.

This couple had a son, Donald, who attended Modoc
Union High School, when I was just a freshman. Don was
a track man and set a record for MUHS in the 440, his
time was just about two minutes. That was pretty fast
in those days. Don represented the school at Chico,
where the Northern High School Athletic Association
held their big meet. I cannot remember his exact
placement in that meet but I think that he placed
first in the 440. We were all very proud of his
