Hi all,
A member of our family history society is looking for Albert Knowles born
circa 1876 - when he married in 1906 no father was given on certificate. I
suppose he could be under a totally different surname. We have looked at the 1881
census but not see anyone who could fit the bill.
The searcher is under the impression that Albert could have ended up on the
boats, he evidently disappears after his wife dies in 1920 leaving 2 children
to be brought up by an Aunt.
Would appreciated any informat
Dear Les,
I do not have any information that might help.
However, I have noted the BERRY name in the East Midlands in connection with
my CUTTS researches. The Cutts were at Cromford Wharf in the early 1800s
and spread out from there.
Just in case you have come across any Cutts in your line - as you know canal
people are elusive!!
Best wishes,

Thank Mike
This is my husband's family tree I am researching (have already done mine)
and he always said that his family were gipsies but I cannot find any
trace of that but wonder if this is what they called the boatpeople of their
family? (No disrespect to boat people out there !)
Thanks
Vanessa

I can't really offer any help, but perhaps in an enquiry like this, you
should offer a little more on the person.
Especially, where he was born/lived etc
Could be UK or USA!
Cheers and happy hunting

Thank you for any information you can give.

Vanessa
We have quiet periods, Leslie, it does pick up. Hang on in there.

Hi Vanessa
Just a comment in passing. Recently started to look at my wife's family who
appeared to have quite a few relations on the GJC in the past.
It is starting to become a bit like opening a cupboard stuuffed with
everything. So far I have found many folks all related by marriage spread up and
down the canal system from Braunston to London. It has appeared to me that many
canal folk married other canal folk. Have not found a Leavesley yet but who
knows?
Perhaps someone should start a c

Thanks Neil,
Yes, you are quite right I should have given some more info on the person.
All I was told this evening was, Albert born c 1876, area unknown. The age
calculated from the age given when Albert married in 1906 age 30. He married in
Christ Church, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. No father given. So presumption
is, Albert could be illegitimate. (Mind you father could have been dead.)
(I have not seen the Church entry as yet.)
Thank you for you interest.

Maureen

Hi again
I think that a lot of people equated canal folk with gipsies due to their
way of life.
My canal research came out of a visit to Marsworth on the Grand Union Canal.
My wife was a Jeffery and we knew very little about her grandfather as he
died during WW1. He was commemorated on the War Memorial there with another
Jeffery who I later discovered to be a younger brother.
I was unable to speak to my father in law as he died young himself and had
only been a baby, the youngest of 4 child

Vanessa
Can anyone help me please. I am trying to find out more about my GGGrandfather John Berry whose boy was found in the in the Grand Junction Canal at Norwood, Middlesex on 28 November 1839. He was described at an Inquest into his death as being a Lock Keeper but his age on the copy of his death certificate in not very clear.
His wife, Sarah died about 10 weeks before his death, Her age is recorded as being 74 years.
Is there anyone who has knowledge of the Grand Junction Canal who light on this as I am i
