6. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Re: 1881 Census Boatmen and Allied Trades [1]
Dear Thelma I was interested to read of the Weaver Belle being in Ipswich in 1881 and also of the family of Robert Arnold there too. I have ancestors in the Northwich area of Cheshire with that name and on a boat with that name! The Boat worked on the Weaver taking salt to Liverpool but I also heard my grandfather worked along the coast, particularly of N Wales. I wonder if anyone else has any news of the Arnold and Cowley families? Thank you, Sue . ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, November 2

14. [CANAL-PEOPLE] Boat 'Owners' [1]
Went to a fascinating 4th canal history workshop yesterday in West Midlands, UK. Learnt that the 'Owner' named on canal toll permits might not always be the owner of the boat, but the owner of the cargo. Something I hadn't appreciated before and might be of help to someone. Also that so-called Number Ones (in 1904, boats owned by boatman, but now used to refer to the boatmen who owned their own boats) were as highly paid as the crack fly-boat captains, around 1 shilling per mile. Workshop excellent by t
