Dear Friends:
I am working on a research project that traces Highland music (tunes, not text) from Scotland to America ( (especially North Carolina and the "Argyll Colony") and eventually up to modern popular music.
My family came to NC in 1774 via Skye then Kintyre. Some of my North Carolina ancestors were pipers and fiddle players; I am a musician, as well.
Part of my project is cataloging any Scottish music I can find in North Carolina during that period (1750-1800). Another part of setting the stag
Norton's Antivirus won't touch it. We had to use McAfee's to remove the
virus as it infected the Norton's files. It is very difficult to remove.

[ My apologies in advance for posting this to the NCSCOTS, NCCumberland, and
Cape-Fear-Scots lists; not sure how much cross-over there is ]
In 1930 John C. BAIN published a Bain family history in Wade, NC. I have a
copy of it from the NC State Archives, and I would like to purchase the
original booklet, if anyone has one that they would be willing to part with.
It's largely for sentimental reasons, since this is the booklet that set me
into my genealogical wanderings more than 10 years ago.
Thanks!
Chris
There was a Marshall Caulder that lived in Parkton, Robeson County, NC, for
a long time. He was not born there, but came as the town policeman and
lived there 30 or 40 years. Passed away about 10 years ago, or so. Not
sure any connection here. Parkton is about 40 miles from the S. C. line and
probably about 35 miles NW of Bolton.

Betty,
I can't help you with your John David Weed but I can answer two questions
you posed.
The Latin word, via, means through, road or by way of, so the literal
translation as used here would be "by way of the Cape Fear River." The
Cape Fear was a main migration route for those entering by water. This
river goes through Wilmington, NC and on up to Cross Creek or current day
Fayetteville, NC. Large boats could not go above Fayetteville.
If he came to South Carolina you may want to check Greogetown SC
Does or has any one have information on a Set of Caulders Some where in the Lower part of NC. up to 1930. Jessie is supposedly Buried in a grave yard in Bolton NC... he died in the late 1920's to early 1930. And I have tried the NC death records and have fou

My computer was infected by the W32/Magistr@MM virus/worm due to a
oversight of our MIS department. The worm "robbed " email addresses from
my hard drive and others people's hard drives and compiles fake email

fragments from my computer or someone upline from me and send the
message to someone in your address book.

Is anyone researching these names...
Andrew Campbell (VA-ca 1765 - TN ca1835) is suppose to be descended from
Robert from Ireland, then ohn from Ireland, then Duncan from Scotland.
Malcolm McCraney (GA ca 1798-AL ca 1830) descended from John from NC, then
Murdock from Jura, Scotland and then Archibald of Scotland.
If any of these names sound familiar, please let me know.

I've been downloading long files for 20 years and I've never gotten a virus. Long files aren't the problem. Ignorance is the problem.
Lisa gave some good advice on file types to avoid opening, though she forgot to mention that .com, .bat, and .vbs files are dangerous too. You should also make sure that any program that can automatical
Hi Chris,
Do you have a Murdoch Bain (married Nancy Sinclair, Robeson Co., NC, March 25, 1823)? He also sold land which he had purchased from J.S. Rodo/Rodes to John Sinclair in Robeson on October 26, 1834.
Anything sound familiar? I'd really appreciate hearing from you if so,

Ok, old dumb grandma needs to know. How in the world can you tell if an
e-mail message is an exe or a pif or scr,
bat, or vbs without opening the file and printing it? I appreciate people
telling us what not to do or what to do, but the
critical thing we need is HOW TO DO what you say we should do.

Hi All,
Sorry for the crossposting, but I want to get the word out ASAP.
I just got a spam from GenTruth , which is yet another attempt to repackage Family Discovery - www.familydiscovery.com . A websearch at www.google.com for <"family discovery" genealogy scam> turned up 44 pages, all of which are negative. Here is a sample of what their unhappy customers have said about them:

I recently went to Staples and bought the new Norton Anti-Virus 2001 that
blocks viruses from email. It works great. It has already blocked one, and
let me know about it. I think it cost around $30.00, but that is cheaper
than having to haul it in somewhere to have it de-bugged.

The first thing to do is to get rid of Outlook Express, because it assumes you're stupid and don't care what type of file you're receiving. See

Dear Fellow Researchers,
I have recently been referred to this list for tracing the family of
William D. Griggs. born circa 1805 place unknown , married Martha, whose
surname probably begins with C. circa 1825. Martha's birthplace is
North Carolina. Therefore, I think that the marriage took place
somewhere in NC. William died in Pittsylvania County in late 1847 to
1849. I have found that Griggs is a sept of Clan Gregor and that many
Scot-Irish people came into southern Virginia from North Carolina.
