I am listening and taking into consideration *everything* everyone is
saying. FYI: the "vote" is evenly divided. That means that just as many
people are in favor of the gateway as there are against it. I also note
that those in favor are not regular "posters" to this list, but tend to post

Good Morning Folks;
Following my message to soc.genealogy.west-indies, I have had several
letters regarding the "Caribbean Historical & Genealogical Journal, so
thought I would post my reply to the List as well as to the individuals who
did write to me.
Thank you Carol for the reply you posted to the newsgroup, following the
request from Neil. I have been tied up for the last couple of days and have
not had the chance to get to my e-mail messages.

Any member who may own a Dictionary of National Biography(some such) or a
work on Colonial personages in Jamaica...I am trying to find out abit of
information on a Jasper Hall esq of Otterborn Hexham and Jamaica who was
active in the Jamaican Assembly and was at one time I beleive Speaker.
He was active between 1770'-1800 or thereabouts. He owned plantations in
St. Thomas, St. Andrews and other locations I'm not sure about.

Please vote on this. Everyone needs to vote or this will be decided by
others. I just can't keep track of email votes (unless someone's browser
don't support forms on the vote page...then, I'll just transfer the "vote"
to the vote page). I have an unbelieveably high volume of email, and trying
to sort through it to keep track of votes is very difficult for me. So,
please vote on this formally at:

Hi AmyAnn,
I found reference to a company of Captain Sedgwick of Col Humphries
Regiment of Foot in a list of wills in the PCC in Caribbeana.(Not Sedgwick
will). This is probably in the Army of Penn and Venables who captured
Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655. If there are any records of him they
would be in the Army records of England in the PRO of this time. The
island was not really populated with many others than soldiers up to 1660
when the British drove the last of the Spanish out, so how the British

I do not question the information posted on the Island of Providence. What I
am wanting to know is this: According to history, the island was first
charted in 1627 under the name Santa Catalina, if this were indeed the island,
wouldn't the ship have set sail for Santa Catalina, not the Island of
Providence? What references tell you this is in fact the same island? I
don't understand what tells you this is in fact the island the Expectation
sailed to. Could you site your references, please.

does anyone have any information on Robert Sedgwick, commissioner to
Jamaica after the British took over the Island. He is said to have died in
Jamaica of fever in 1656. Where could I find out more on this man. Did he
own land in Jamaica and was his family with him? During this time how were
the British received in Jamaica? What was the position of "commissioner"?
Thanks

Still looking for Carothers and Massey in the West Indies as well.
Good Afternoon;
I have listed below some baptism records for Christ Church, Barbados that
I obtained while working on my Weatherill one-name study. After finding
listings in the IGI for the West Indies, I worked through the films of the
records to double check the data. Where I had a Weatherill (and spelling
variation) listing, I copied the page. The list below is from those
printouts. Hopefully they might be of interest to list members.
Cheers,
David

No doubt most subscribers to this Caribbean genealogy list already know of
Vaughn Royal's excellent and helpful WEST INDIES SURNAME INTEREST LIST,

Dear Julie,
Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your first e-mail asking me if I was
familiar with the names of Carver, Murray, and Townsend. I am not. In
response to your e-mail below, since I live in Salt Lake City and the films are
readily available here I will look up the names you have requested. Do you
want a photocopy or is it okay if I just transcribe it for you? I will try to
go this week if I can get unpacked and settled from my trip.

Hello list members,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to go about finding out exactly
where some property (about 81 acres in the mid-1800's) named "JAVA" in
Manchester, Jamaica is today and how can I find out who lives there and owns
it now. In the mid-1800's it was owned by Francis Glasse. Any assistance
would be appreciated.

My main
concern at this time is it is my understanding that when you are subscribed
to one of the "gateway" lists, if you post a message then you email and
many times your ISP is identified to the newgroup leaving you private mail
