I wonder if any one can help me sort out a problem concerned with the
alleged ownership of three Barbadian plantations.
When he died in 1829 John Branford Lane was alleged to be the owner of
three plantations. So far I have not been able to get beyond a vague
reference to 'the plantation at Black Rock'. A major problem is that I
think his estate went into 'chancery' and my searches in that direction
have not been very productive so far.
So I wondered if anyone on the list might have some d
Sadie,
Also Keep in mind, that before St. Croix was Danish it was French, Spanish
and English. The Danish were neutral, (most of the time, that is)so the VI
were considered a freeport. Because the Danish had such trouble recruiting
inhabitants, they allowed anyone to live there.
I don't know about slaves taking the names of their owners, but I have seen
Free negro's, or Free colored, listed who have probated wills, in the
Chancery records, they owned property, and had something to leave in a will.

Hello,
You may find the following book useful in understanding what is
available in this series. The book is a demographic study of slave
populations in these former British colonies during that time period and
draws much of its information from records in the T71 series. There is
a first edition (1984) and a second as well (1995). Best of luck,
Paul

Hello Everyone,
This is just a note to inform you that Chris Cod may be around
tomorrow, Saturday, November 16th, to take a look at his messages. So, if
anyone would like to add anything, please feel free to do so.
And again, this is relayed to you by his friend, Tina Rene'e.
Hope you all have a great day!

Hi, Peggy,
I'm not familiar with records this late in Haitian history. Perhaps a good place to pose
the question would be on the query board of the HaitiGenWeb.
I can publish the question for you in my newsletter, but the next issue, the April 2003
one, probably would not go out until the end of May. If you want me to do that, please
send me your street address, as many of my readers don't have e-mail or computers.
Happy hunting

PRO = Public Record Office. In this case at Kew in London.
CO143/31 is the reference to the document. CO stands for Colonial Office,
143 is the group of documents to which it refers and /31 is the piece
number. You can find the index on the web at www.pro.gov.uk. It is possible
(at some expense) to have documents photo-copied and sent to you. But it may
be cheaper, if less enjoyable, than having a trip to London and seeing the
sights as well as the documents.

I'm assuming that you have already found the reference to the Danish
Chancery- confirmed wills for 1847 for Henry Jennings Hill, Ruth Ann
Hill, and Mary Hill of St. John. In case you haven't the site address:

As to places to do research on St. Thomas, I'd look at Enid M. Baa
Public Library (the von Scholten Collection) downtown and the Caribbean
Genealogy Library, located at Al Cohen Mall in Havensight. I am
interested in hearing replies as to where in
serving Bligh indeed - I wonder, but doubt, that it is the estimable spirit
"Captain Bligh's Rum" which Cod is serving. I have "enjoyed" many a headache
from that fine spirit in years since past.
Best wishes to Cod and his kind friend, Tina, for keeping us in touch with
him. May he soon find larger quarters.
see ya

Richard,
It would not surprise me if the "ANDUZE" family came from the area of ALES, France either.

I just wanted to add that my main objective is to share the information I
have in the best way.
Nothing more, I am not in "competition" with anyone. I have learnt that
sharing information helps the research you are doing.
I am sure a lot of us collect information that is of no use to the research
we are doing and I think it should be passed on.
Any ideas how that can be done?

Hi Rhona
Hope you are well
I have several wills for the Tyrrell's in Jamaica, but would love to hear
what you have recently found in detail so I can check it against my stuff
when i have relocated and can dig out the material again
Life has been quite difficult and I deeply miss being able to focus on my Cod
work etc But this too shall pass and I am making some progress. If you
respond to list, Tina will save it to disk so I can look over it at home
Thanks for thinking of me

These two pieces of info are really strategic in importance - thank you.
Where would Caribbean slaves have got their names from and why are they
English/French sounding?

Dear all
I unfortunately have come to this debate late, but can I recommend that if you are a UK resident that you e-mail or write to your MP immediately,
1) Expressing your concerns
2) Requesting that s/he write a question to the Minister that should be as follows
Currently the PRO stores records of registration of births deaths and marriages of UK citizens occurring overseas. Under the operational selection policy 18 it is likely that this will no longer continue.
