1. RE: [Cmn-L] The Amish [1]
thanks Mary Beth - of course over here in Wales we'd know very little - and I suppose seeing the different views and explanations just goes to show that we can't really form any judgement second hand - but if I visited Lancaster I'd come into the category of gawking tourist - not a tag I'd like much - any more than being on the receiving end. I think my pal's getting his "comeuppance" at the moment on another group as Europe beat America in the Mosconi Cup - and he's been on the receiving end of much taunt

> It may not be enough merely to look at a road map. The distsnce from St Ishmaels to Llanstephan is less than a mile - by ferry across the estuary of the River Towy. Lots people used this route in the past (and not a few were drowned in rough weather!) - the boats were just little vessels with oars and maybe a small sail. 5. [Cmn-L] TV Programmes [1]
Janie, the British TV programs we get are the detectives, 'Frost", "Morse", "Poirot","Pascoe and Dalziel", "Miss Marple" etc. and some cultural stuff like "Benny Hill", but a lot have them have disappeared, I think to a cable channel called "BBC America" which isn't on our cable system. I don't think we get any of your "soaps". We generate enough of those "home grown misery on display" shows but I don't watch any of them. Oddly enough, I mentioned the "1900 House" and " the "1940 House" yesterday and they
6. RE: [Cmn-L] Photos of old Llanelli [1]
Hi Pauline I'd never really looked at the build before - it's quite an imposing frontage - not so imposing round the back, in regulation battleship grey! It looked as if it had probably been a smart family home at one time - but building facades can be very misleading. So many of the terraces have had their fronts done up - but quite often you come across the original stone fronts - which I guess nearly all the housing stock was built in - but was this a local stone or brought in from somewhere? It's a ver

Hello Sandra A John EVANS (born c1864 in Llangendeirne) kept the Halfway House in Gwempa Llangendeirne from 1891 on. 9. [Cmn-L] First Canned beer [1]
On 3rd December 1935 the first canned beer was produced in the Felinfoel Brewery. One of the few cargoes which got through to Malta during the worst months of the seige of the island in WWII, included a consigment of 'Felinfoel Canned' for the Llanelly Territorials engaged in the Anti-Arcraft defences. 13. Re: [Cmn-L] Interests CARROLL, EVANS [1]
Hi Pauline, and thanks for the lookup. I was particularly interested to find out more about Rachel, and to see if Ellen had been born before the census to confirm her name. I am expanding on a family tree left to me by my grandfather, where she appears as Ellen, but in looking for her birth in the PRO indexes recently the closest match I could find in time and place was an Eleanor Carroll. I'll have to take another look! Thanks again. Peter Carroll Wiltshire, UK. ----- Original Message ----- From: Pauli

16. Re: [Cmn-L] Llan???? place name. [1]
Hi Pat, In 1851 they were at Two Locks, Llantarnum, MON but Elizabeth only gave the county of Carmarthenshire as her place of birth. In 1881 Benjamin was still in Llantarnum but Elizabeth was dead. So I think it likely that Llantarnum would be where to look in 1871 - I shall order the film tomorrow at the LDS. Thanks for your interest. 20. [Cmn-L] A challenge [1]
Janie, reading your story makes me ever so thankful and grateful to the late George Taylor and John Evans, my gt. grandfathers and to George Gregory, my late grandfather for packing up what little they had and hitting the treacherous "High Seas" for America and they knew not what. I'm not into "putting-up-with". "Coping" isn't my style. If our cable TV goes out for a few minutes, or on those rare occasions, heaven forefend, that the electricity goes off, I'm a nervous wreck, stumbling about the house tryin

Pauline Christmas Thomas married Margaret James on 25/9/1821 in Cardinganshire, Wales. Evan Thomas (I think his brother) married Jane Evans 13/5 1831 in Cardinganshire, Wales. Would it be possible to find their parents, their birth date, their birth place and anything else about then? Thank you in advance. Jerry Thomas
