Hello Sylvia
You would have to contact Gwent FHS for Monmouth records - we only have the
1881 census for Monmouth - the IGI and 1813-1837 marriages - if any of these
can help you let me know.
To get to Carmarthenshire from Mountain Ash using public transport - you could
catch the train. The train station in Carmarthen is a few hundred yards away
from Carmarthen RO just over the River Towy bridge and in front of you is this
large imposing building which is the County Hall of Carmarthenshire.
If you get d
Hello Mary
I cannot check 1871 census for you as we can only view some of 1851 and the
whole of 1881. The only ones indexed for 1851 are Llanelly town and
Carmarthen town. If you wanted us to search the census or registers not
indexed this would have to come under our research services. You can order the
census reports from your local LDS FHC centres.
If we can assist further let us know.

Hi Rodney,
>From the Major Jones "Historic Carmarthenshire Homes and Their Families"
we find the Daltons of Penybedd, Pembrey.
"This was a superior farmstead, home of yeomen and minor gentry. It
formed part of the Cwrt Penbre estate in the days of the Vaughans who
owned it prior to 1642, and from them passed by marriage to the Lords
Ashburnham. It was held on lease in the 18th century by the Daltons who
acted as agents to the Cwrt estate. Fenton mentions 'Pen y bedd the
mansion of Charles Dalton, gent.'

Pauline mentioned the hand-written scrawl in the GRO marriage indexes
and the difficulty of reading them (presumably on the fiches?) and Pat
Phillips mentioned not being able to find a marriage certificate.
Some points gleaned from "A Comedy of Errors" (a book about the GRO
marriage records 1837-1899):
Not all marriages got into the indexes in the first place. If you are
able to check with the local Registrar's indexes this might be the
better way to go about it.
The typewritten books at the GRO are copi

Hello Sheila
Yes, Carmarthen has changed an awful lot - you were here last in 1983 - well
at present they are building Carmarthen By-pass - it is chaos now - when it is
finished it will be a lot easier to enter Carmarthen itself, because as you
know, all traffic North of Carmarthen has to go through Carmarthen town - to
get to the county hall takes longer in the traffic queue than travelling from
Llanelli itself!!
When you get the marriage certificate let us know who you are looking for, and
we'll see if

Pauline,
Thanks for replying. You mention that you have Rices in index back to
1612. I am curious when the Rice name was
Hello Jacky
Glad to know your interested on joining - I have no idea though of how much
the exchange rate is from Australian dollars. Why not have your parents send
it through the post when they are in Wales, they'll have sterling with them,
cheaper for you that way.
Will they be going to Carmarthen RO when they are here? Did you get the
directions to Conwil Elved - Richard did send them did he?
Speak soon

Hi Pauline,
I have been looking at the list for quite a while. I did put one request in
about Ellen Harris, but I didn't receive any answer at all. She was born
188?, was the daughter of John Harris and she had one brother Evan. I
understand they were a
Hello Cynthia
I am so pleased that the information I gathered for you helped solve one of
your mysteries. It is difficult when you are so far away from the records
yourself, that the internet has brought so many people, from so many walks of
life to help one another with their genealogical interests.
To obtain the marriage of David Bowen and Alice it may be in Llanelli
registers, if not they could have married anywhere - have you tried St
Catherine's House Indexes? We'll cross that bridge when we come t
Pauline,
i wonder if you could look up for the birth/baptism of a George Phillips
born abt 1837, I have two possible place of birth, one in Llanelli and one
in Kidwelly, are these two places near to each other? Could they be the
same person? George married Hannah ? might be around 1862, First child
born 1863. I really need to know if George's parents were Thomas Phillips
and Mary Bowen, making him then the brother of a great grandfather William.
Who I know had a brother George, but the Kidwelly birth

Hello Acie,
I have four references in my Carmarthenshire book on the Laugharne
family. It would be lengthy to put on the list but if you want to
contact me privately will send you what I have. Elaine.
Hello Jodie
I do not think that Hankins or Hinkins is Welsh - Welsh names are usually
taken from the fathers christian name - Jenkin or Jenkins is Welsh??
Could anyone help here - I know that Helen is the expert on Welsh names - any
chance Helen??
Thanks

Hi, I am struggling to find this marriage, can anyone please help. I have
sent several times for the marriage certificate, but it always comes back
nothing listed, so this is my last try. Thomas Thomas married Anne Stephen
on 21/10/1885 at Cwmisor Caledfwich Wales, I have this information from
their family bible, after a great deal of effort I managed to obtain Anne's
birth certificate, but no luck with Thomas's birth or marriage yet, here's
hoping someone can help with this. Many thanks.

Hello Bob
My understanding of the derivation of the surname Rice is that it is a
variation of Rhys or Rees - an English attempt to write the name Rhys
according to "The Surnames of Wales" by John & Sheila Rowlands, which
states:
"In 15C, in no region is it less than 3% of names in pedigrees, whilst
it reaches 9% in parts of north and mid Wales - the average throughout
Wales was 5%."
"1813-17 (survey of Welsh marriages): Mainly to be found in south Wales,
it has much less of a presence in mid Wales, and i
Hello Sylvia
I bet there are lots of Evans and Williams in the graveyard. The graveyard in
question is the municipal cemetery - all denominations were buried there.
They have a computer index in the office in the office of the graveyard which
is called 'Box Cemetery' I'm not quite sure why it is called Box cemetery -
maybe someone on the list knows??
An address or place would be a good starting point to search these indexes -
otherwise you know how it goes!!
Where exactly is the 'Mount' Llanelli itsel
Hi Helen,
Oh dear, it seems the book may be a dead loss, then. I did have luck
with one that a friend of mine in Australia had been trying to get for
ages...so just maybe. If I connect will let you know. Elaine.
A message from Wendy Archer, if you are having problems reading the mailings
on our list over the past week you will find it down to BT, some of us seem to
be reading answers before the question, this is also down to BT holding
certain calls for long periods then releasing them in certain areas.
