1. [CARRICO] Sullivan Co., IN, CARRICO [1]
Does anyone have a copy of Joy Carmichael Helm's (1991) book, "Genealogical Study of the Carmichael, Pethel, Carrico, Purcell Families of Sullivan County, Indiana"? I see it also cited as "Carmichael, Pethtel, Purcell, Carrico Family Tree" (1996). It appears it may be an unpublished manuscript, available only at the Sullivan County Public Library. Diana

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, Roy. It's not out of lack of interest or appreciation, but things have been "hopping" with the DNA project, and I'm just getting caught up on it. One reason I'm working on this Peter's line is that we have a second descendant of Peter of WV being DNA tested, and I want to get his line online before his results come back, scheduled for Jan 2nd. Thank you so much for clearling the waters, here. It *is* confusing! Diana > -----Original Message----- > Fro
3. [CARRICO] Charles CARRICO of Sullivan Co IN -- not a CARRICO? [1]
Y-DNA testing has shown that a patrilineal descendant of Charles CARRICO of Sullivan Co., IN, is not a genetic match to other tested descendants of Peter CARRICO, 1674 immigrant to Maryland. The inescapable conclusion here is that he has an NPE, a "non-paternal event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity), in his patrilineal line, which is Charles CARRICO & Martha REASON _Reason CARRICO & Elizabeth ENGLE __William G. 4. [CARRICO] Fairfax VA Carrico/Callico [1]
Not sure if Diana wants this posted to the DNA list, as this has something to do with the discussion there in regards to the DNA of a descendant of Charles Carrico who matches with a Littleton with Fairfax Co. connections and also mentions relatives of George Washington. I did find this interesting enough and thought that some on this list might find it of interest. I was actually trying to find where I found my List of Inhabitants of Fairfax County, Virginia 1770 that I have posted here: http://freepa

Of course you like it, you got a match. I got and NPE! Hrumpf. ;-) Seriously, and with regard to this and my other projects, we're finally starting to get the results that make the slow, beginning years worth the struggle. Thank you all for your support! 8. Re: [CARRICO] Catharine CARRICO mother of James Jefferson GOFF? NO; Peter, Francis, and Cathering [1]
Diana, Morton implies that Peter, Francis and Catherine Carrico were siblings on page 331 but states this as fact on page 419 as CARRICO Francis, Catharine - sister to Francis - m. James Goff, Peter - bro. to Francis... There is no evidence that Francis Carrico existed. Catharine (companion of James Goff) was not a sister of Francis and Peter Carrico but Catherine Daugherty Goff daughter of John Turton & Monica Carrico Goff. She may have been a niece of Francis and Peter Carrico but definitely not their

10. [CARRICO] CARRICO in Sullivan Co., IN [1]
Someone kindly sent me some photocopies of material on CARRICO of Sullivan Co., IN. One is a page without the source that I suspect comes from "175th Anniversary History of Sullivan County, 1816-1991" published by the Sullivan County Historical Society. I'm wondering if anyone can verify this is the case. On pp. 234-235, there are biographical sketches of Bill CARRICO, Charles CARRICO, Josiah CARRICO, and Owen CARRICO, Jr. If these aren't from that book, does anyone know the actual source? Diana
11. Re: [CARRICO] Catharine CARRICO mother of James Jefferson GOFF? NO; Peter, Francis, and Cathering [1]
Actually Morton (1914: 331) states, "Peter, Francis, and Catherine Carrico arrived in 1786 on the Pulliam farm at the mouth of Wolf Creek. It is not known that their parents came with them." One might assume he meant all three when he said "their parents," but did he mean just the males? Was Catherine a wife of one of them, so the sentence meant her parents didn't come, either? I think the balance is tipped towards their being siblings, but I don't think this source, which is secondary to begin with, i

Diana, I don't know the source of the information, but I was interested to find a number of references to Josiah Carrico in books on Google Books. 13. [CARRICO] CarriƧa [1]
I just found a Portuguese word, "Carriga," the common name of Troglodytes troglodytes, the bird we know in the U.S. as the Winter Wren, but is known simply as "Wren" in Europe (in English). With the cedilla on the c, I presume it would be pronounced, ka-REES-sa. http://www.cidadevirtual.pt/p.e.monsanto/fauna_flora/fn_carrica.html The bird is wide-ranging in habitat, including suburbs and gardens, and occurs as a common resident in Portugal. 14. Re: [CARRICO] Another Look at Origins - ITALY [1]
If you look at the number of Italian CARRICOs who came to the U.S. in the early 1900s (just 50): http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Census/Carrico/CarricoCensusSummary.shtml you get the impression that there never were very many, but that of the ones there were, half of them emigrated! There are certainly far more in the U.S., today, than there are in Italy. I wish we had maps similar to the Italian one for Portugal and Brazil. Dear list, I don't know if there is anyone here that can answer any of my questions, but thought I'd give it a try anyway. On my website I have a picture of Samuel P. Carrico & one of his first 2 wives, not sure which wife: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~boorom/carrico/kypiccarricosranarita.html#UNKNOWN Samuel Pious Carrico married 3 times, 1st to Idella Hayden on Feb. 4, 1895. Dear Jim and Phil: The Portuguese origin of the name, CARRICO, came from my research. Most members of my family bought the story of the French brothers, etc. You know rest. The rest guy into the Northern European lore. Those stories I grew up with and those I believed until I decided to investigate for myself. During my more serious years of researching this issue, I once offered $750 to the person who could prove Peter was French. My offer of $750 still stands for the first person that can prove that Pet

All: The site below is quite interesting. "Carrico" showed only one site for the surname - in Sicilia; however, "Carico" showed distribution in several provinces - with the highest concentration in Puglia. There are Carico's in other provinces along the west coast and in northern Italy. See map at http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html?cognome=CARICO &t=cognomi-prov. Thanks Diana for this link. Regards, Fred
19. Re: [CARRICO] founding/famous CARRICOs [1]
As far as I know, there were no "founding fathers" named CARRICO, and I have yet to run into any who would be popularly called "famous." There was a Harry L. CARRICO (b. 4 Sep 1916) who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. There's a rather lurid discussion of his legal positions on this page: http://www.samsloan.com/white-su.htm Diana > -----Original Message----- > From: carrico-bounces@rootsweb.com On Behalf Of Douglas Alger > Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2007 9:12 PM > To: gc-gateway@rootsweb

I had never head the term "melungeon" used before until today. I googled it and came up with several descriptions of melungeon people which range from people of mixed races to people of Mediterranean ancestry who have settled in Appalachia and people of Turkish ancestry. Could you possibly explain your use of the term"melungeon" as it relates to the Carrico's? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Folks, folks. This is all too funny in light of the fact that DNA eventually will solve the issue of Peter's origin, given that known and provable male descendents live in our midst. Let's spend our time working to get these cousins of ours to participate in the Carrico DNA project! 22. Re: [CARRICO] Maryland State Archives [1]
Tim, I don't disagree with you that CARRICO is an ancient Portuguese surname, but I don't think it can be argued that the surname had a single origin, meaning Peter CARRICO has to be Portuguese. The DNA test results already show the name has been adopted independently at least twice, and only one of those two is known to be Portuguese. CARRICO, with that exact spelling, is also an Italian name, and most of the foreign-born CARRICOs in the 1900-1930 censuses were born in Italy, not Portugal. The fact tha
23. Re: [CARRICO] Maryland State Archives [1]
Tim, I hope you are right, but DNA often only points the way to the paper trail. In the case of my mainly Protestant Goff family, I found a 42/43 match with the Catholic Stephen Gough (d. 1701) family of St. Mary's Co., MD in March 2006. However, to this day we still have no idea how the two families are connected. In a circuitous way, that is a big driver for my interest in the Carrico family at the moment. In other words, I now have a tremendous clue about where to search for a connection, but have

Diana: Could you please tell us what your research shows regarding the geographical dispersion of Carrico families in Italy?...if you have that information. Are you aware of any researchers who have investigated the surname in Italy? >From looking at the DNA data (map) for J2a1b - which you linked recently - it sure does look like Italy is a prime candidate as the "mother country" for our Carrico ancestors.
