Barbara is right; it's well worth the read if youst for teh historic
perspective. He does take license with a few historic characters to
make the story flow but it works well.
Dalessandro teamed up with Gladys Hansen on the book and is working on a
documentary film with her on the topic. He also did a screenplay on
1906 that will be released as a film next year on the 100th anniversary
of the big quake & fire.
If you get a chance to hear him speak, it's well worth the time. He's

Yes, this is a true story. I have been at the SF Recorder's office working on a project and overheard a couple of the clerks talking. It seems that someone had come in and asked if they had to renew their marriage license. Now, this may seem pretty stupid, but think about it. We have to renew every other license we have, why not this one? :-)

Hi Maggi,
Backups first-- The best tool I know of is Symantec Ghost. It backs up
a bootable image of your disk on a second disk so if the first one dies,
no loss. It can be an internal or external drive. I like USB2.0
interface since you can attach it or store it safely and easily.
Unfortunately, I don't have a second drive big enough on my laptop right
now so I use a 20GB USB drive and just copy my critical files weekly.
Either would work well for you. I create a directory and just manually

I have now completed transcribing the first 84 pages (out of 153
pages)for the 10th Ward, 3nd District (Precinct) in the 1870 Census for
San Francisco County, CA and have it online. This Enumeration District
(ED=51) is one of the EDs in the 1870 San Francisco Federal Census (made
up of EDs 39-57).
This Enumerator used the term "Dist." or "District" instead of the
customary "Precinct" in identifying the this sub-division of the 10th
ward. This is why "Dist" of "District" is used at the top of each page

HI,
I just want to tell everyone interested in San
Francisco history about a terrific book, "1906 "
by James Dalessandro. It is a novel, I must admit,
but it has so much historical detail about the
earthquake and the days leading up to it that the
reader becomes engrossed in the everyday life of
the characters. The book covers lot of the
corruption of the civic leaders, and having
fictional characters intermingle with them makes
it an easier read then just straight history.
Several of the characters are re
I am wondering if there is a map of San Francisco showing exactly what part
of the city the fire destroyed in the 1906 Earthquake and fire. I have
family living on Belvedere Street during that time and I am wondering if
their house would have been effected by this disaster.
Thank you

Judie is partially correct in that the Cal legislation does not restrict birth (and death) indexes. Anything that was in the public domain previous to the passage of the bill is freely available, even without a password (if I am wrong, please let me know where it says this).
I believe the State of California no longer sells any of the indexes. Ancestry.com took them off their site because of all the "negative" attention. Vitalsearch-ca.com has them on their site for free, though if you want to use more ad

Joseph Alexander BEARHOPE died on April 9, 1934 in San Francisco. We do not
know where he is buried, the obituary did not indicate. His wife Cora still
survived him. They migrated to this area from Rochester, NY after the 1930
census. Joseph had a sister Anna or Anne BEARHOPE who was a postmistress and
resided in Oceanside, San Digeo County, California.
We are wondering if Cora re-married after his death, as Cora is not listed
in the death index unless there was
Hi all,
I'm new to this list, trying to find out about Walter Maurice (or Morris)
SIMON, a sailor, who died in SF in June 1896. He was born in Ruthin,
Denbighshire, Wales in about 1866 - I've been trying to find out what
happened to him for ages, but was unable to find him in UK censuses after
1881 (when he was living in Liverpool) or a death record or anything.
Last weekend I found a record of his mother's memorial inscription - she is
buried at Llandrillo in Denbighshire, and Walter is commemorated on h

Any suggestions on how to research this group?

The only Peter MARLOWE in the 1930 census is in North Bergen Townshp, Hudson county, New Jersey ED 9-345 age 7 an inmate in an orphanage, Barbara G??naud Orphanage. It indicates his birthplace as NJ and the same for his parents. Parents birthplace could be an error. Jeanine
