1st County Hospital built 1855 NW of Shasta at approximatly where the
cross of 299W and Rock Creek Rd. First hospital Dr. James Pelham for $50 a
month. Enlarged in 1859 to accommodate women patients. enlarged again in
1868 and again in 1888 and 189. Closed in 1900.
Moved to South Redding renamed Shasta General Hospital in 1934. closed in
the late 1980s

Today in History: from the Redding Record Searchlight
July 1900
21st swarms of grasshoppers near Lowden's Ranch in Trinity County caused
extensive damage by devouring every bit of green vegetation they could
find. Pioneers of the district said they had never seen such an infestation
in the area before.
22nd a petition was put before the Shasta County Board of Supervisors
asking that a county highway be established on the east side of the
railroad tracks from the first crossing, a mile below Redding, to a

1st it was announced that much of the track of the local division of the
Southern Pacific Railroad between Red Bluff and Dunsmuir would be repaired
and replaced due to the recent accidents in the region.
2nd William Silverthorn landed a sturgeon that weighed more than 8 pounds
on the Pit River near his ferry.
3rd Villa Thompson resigned as manager of the local Sunset Telephone
office. Her successor had not yet been named.
