Hi, Gail,
Welcome and hope you find us friendly and useful
The Holy Ghost Fathers seem to have had a make-over, or face-lift or ...,
and are now known as Spiritans. As you are interested in an affiliated
organisation in the USA, you could view their web-site at
http://www.spiritans.org You will find a contact link there and you should
be able to get the information from them with accuracy, rather than
guesswork.
Hope this helps

Hi, James,
You asked

and explained what you seek.
The basic source for the whereabouts of Catholic records for parishes in
existence before 1880 is a series of six books by Michael Gandy, each
covering a different part of Great Britain (not Ireland). The volume of
interest to you is "Catholic Missions and Registers 1700 - 1880, Volume 4,
North East England" compiled and published by M. Gandy, 1993 (ISBN 0 9520535

Most of us are in this position and either take the hard road and try to
work out what happens, or take the easier path and find someone to ask. This
List is one response.

Hello everybody. My name is Barbara Whiteside and I am a new subscriber. Like most family tree researchers with Catholic ancestors I am having problems putting families together before they were allowed to be baptised in their own Catholic church. If any one out there has access to the Papist returns for Lancashire and a list of Catholic recusants for the same, I really would appreciate a look up for any Whitesides that are listed. I am particularly interested in the area from Lancaster going south incl
Jim and others
Do the 1767 Returns of Papists cover all of England and Wales? If so and if
you are able to check the index as you seem to have done for Barbara, could
you check for any Crosby's or Carbery's in the St George Hanover Square area
of London, please? Am also tracking Woolletts in Monmouth, if that area is
covered.
any help appreciated.

Hi James,
I do not know much about the north-east of England, but in general terms
Catholic records have not been much transcribed. Lancashire probably has the
best coverage, but that is no help to you. There is a Catholic Family
History Society and it has a branch (Derwentside) in the north-east. The
Society has a web-site at http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/cfhs/index.htm
I don't have a contact address for the Derwentside branch but you could
e-mail the society at

Thank you so very much Jim for the information. WOW!!!!!!! You have saved me hours of transcribing from church records. My plan to record the history of the Catholic Whiteside families of the Fylde and Lancaster has suddenly got a lot easier thanks to you. My best to you and yours. Barbara Whiteside

The registers of the old Catholic missions in Lancashire north of Preston
were transcribed between 1900 and ca 1930 and published by t
Hi,
You asked about WHITESIDE in the Returns of Papists. I presume by this you
mean the 1767 Returns. The originals exist in the Library of the House of
Lords and have been transcribed and published by the Catholic Record Society
as Returns of Papists, 1767, Diocese of Chester Transcribed by E.S.
Worrall, Catholic Record Society, Occasional Pub. No. 1, 1980. There is a
separate index, privately published.
I have found the following -

Hi Jim. Thank you so much for prompt reply and your help, it is very much appreciated.
I have to confess, Mea Culpa, that whilst researching my Catholic Whiteside family of the Fylde, I had the insane idea of doing a complete history of the Catholic Whiteside families of Amounderness. I have found no other traces of madness in my family. I seem to be the first one afflicted by it!!!!! BUT nevertheless that is the legacy I hope to leave behind me.
My plan of action? I am slowly extracting all Whitesi
Hello,
My name is Gail and I am new to this list. I am looking for information on the Holy Ghost Mission League. My great grandfather was a member of the Holy Ghost Mission League. I have his cert and the letter. They came from the Holy Ghost Fathers in Washington DC. Does anyone know anything about them.
Thank You Gail
Hi, Carmel,
You ask
> Do the 1767 Returns of Papists cover all of England and Wales?
The answer is YES, but needs amplification. The 1767 Returns of Papists
survive in the House of Lords' Library and have been transcribed and
published by the Catholic record Society (CRO). The publication is in two
volumes of roughly equal size, one for the Diocese of Chester - "Returns of
Papists, 1767, Diocese of Chester Transcribed by E.S. Worrall, Catholic
Record Society, Occasional Pub. No. 1, 1980 - and one for th
Hi, James, again,
I have just read Wednesday's RootsWeb review (15 February 2006, Vol. 9, No.
7), and it includes a new list -
ENG-NBL-MORPETH -- Morpeth and surrounding areas of Northumberland
County approximating the civil registration district, including the
townships of Ashington, Bedlington, and Lynemouth
Perhaps joining this list may enable you to contact someone who may be able
to check the parish records
Regards
