Peggy and Listers,
I'm a newbie on this list, so forgive me if I'm repeating. There are
several old cemeteries that I routinely visit. I know that in order to do
anything I have to get permission from the owner/administrator, but I'm
wondering if you can give me some guidance about repairing old stones,
particularly those slabs we always see broken on the ground. I've seen
quite a few that have been patched and reset. I'm wondering if someone can
tell me what the proper procedure and materials would be

I have been trained in Texas restoration.
In Texas NO ONE ever owns a cemetery. The dead own it. A family can have
'dominion'over their family cemetery and a commerical cemetery can own the
charter to care for it but there is no owner. It can be surveyed as part of a
property but you cannot buy a cemetery. The people on the land cannot sell it
and must by Texas law give a way to get in to it. You

Joretta,
I know what else you can do with the photos once you've entered their
inscriptions into your files. Cemetery Photos is a website and mailing list
that tries to match up photographers with genealogists. You could volunteer
your photos. Here is the webpage:

Kay,
If you haven't already, you may want to try to contact an historical society
in that area. Start at the USGenWeb, from there you can go to the MO
GenWeb, and from there the county where Nevada is located. Sometimes you
will find volunteers willing to do look-ups for you. Or they just may have
better suggestions.

Steve I think this is a wonderful story and I wish we had so many more
stories like this. So much hard word and dedication to clear and clean a

Hi Steve, and all you folks out there who have suggestions--
We are going to restore an old family cemetery that is on privately owned
land. In fact, it is now in a cow pasture, and the cows have knocked down
all the tombstones. We are going to clean out the brush, fence it, and here
we need help, how do you get the tombstones back upright. They must be
awfully heavy, and we don't want to break them. I know some are broken, how
do we fix them?
And how do we go about having a sign made showing the name

I would not be too complacent about the CDs providing permanent storage. We
still don't know how long the CDs will last. Pre-recorded CDs are presently
estimated to have a life of about 50 years and the span for recordable CDs is
significantly shorter. Recordable CDs are easily scratched, and some scratches
can make the disk unreadable. To make matters worse, we have no guarantees that
there will be any CD players around, since the technology is changing so
rapidly. I recently heard from a person who ha

Jan,
Just a thought, but have you considered calling the local newspaper? I
think you may be able to shame them (the twp.) into giving it, at the least,
basic care like mowing. After all, if the twp. is responsible, then they
are responsible. Period. It seems to me that none should take priority over
another.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. My camera does not have the floppy disk in it. I
take my laptop to the cemetery with me, and leave it in the car. When I
fill up the camera with images, I transfer them to the laptop, and then go
back and photograph some more.
One thing I would worry about the Sony, is that operating the floppy disk
drive will suck down a lot of battery power. Better take extra batteries
with you.
