No other special tricks. I sometimes write alternates in parenthesis: George R. /Blough (Blauch)/ But I do not think there is any standard. G'day Jos, > In some cases i do not like to give too much > data. That makes plenty of sense to me - BUT - > If i also do not > want to include source data Why would you not want to do this? If I get data from others I ALWAYS want to know their sources even if it is something like "My mother" otherwise such data is at best a "myth". With the example given it may well still be a myth ;-). > The question i have is; is there an easier way to do this? I assume that there are only SOME sources you do no
5. Name spellings [1]
Any tips on how to handle name differences. The one I am working is BLOUGH vs. BLAUCH. The surviving name appears to be BLOUGH, so I am putting the full name as an alternate. Thus name: George R. /BLOUGH/ alt: George R. /BLAUCH/ I am doing this only for the generation where the change appears to have occurred, then carrying it back, but not forward. Any tricks on how to insert all these ALT's other than the copy feature? Ron Ronald H. Hoffman 1345 Race St. Denver, CO 80206 r
6. Re: [CFTW] Name spellings [1]
Just another thought: If you have an alternate name you can also input: George R. /Blough ook Blauch/. The benefit is that both names (Blough and Blauch) show up seperately in the name search window. This is handy if the alternate name is quite different. The draw-back is that also the name 'ook' shows up in the name search window and i do not know what it does to the gedcom standard. You can even use multiple name/ook's combinations! I use the word 'ook' because it is Dutch for 'also' and i do not know an
7. Re: [CFTW] Remove Source data in Gedcom (follow up) [1]
Hi Ira, Mike My source references are mostly to a personal archive and do not mean anything to anybody else. This is the main reason for deleting the sources. I like your idea about first making a copy of the file and then remove (with the source tool) all the sources i do not want to export. (Saves me to make an extra gedcom ex- and import. And copying the origan file via backup/restore goes faster.) Still i appreciate it that Ira is putting this function on the wishlist. Thanks for the help. Regards.

The "+" before a name usually means a "spouse".
9. Re: [CFTW] (+) [1]
Hello Listers In CFT the + indicates there is additional information about this person further in the story. eg Mary and Stephen had the following children: 46.+ i. John Bonus CHILD 47. ii. Daniel Spencer CHILD 48.+ iii. Sarah CHILD Jerry Port Coquitlam B.C. 11. RE: [CFTW] "Of" [1]
I have noticed that some people use "Of Youngstown, OH" or "Of London, England" instead of "Youngstown, OH" or "London, England." It appears that these have the same meaning, but obviously the sort in the Place Name Editor does not work. I also often see. ", , , OH" instead of "OH" indicating missing City, Twp., Co., entries. Is there an advantage to this or a GEDCOM convention that works off these commas? Ronald H. Hoffman 1345 Race St. Denver, CO 80206 ronhoffman@yahoo.com home: 303-316-93
12. Remove Source data in Gedcom [1]
Hello, Every now and then i give somebody a gedcom file of (part of) my family tree. In some cases i do not like to give too much data. The export function of Cumberland does give the capability to exclude data like 'notes'. If i also do not want to include source data i first make an export to gedcom, then i import this file again in Cumberland and remove all the source data (with the source tool). Finaly i export this cleaned up file to make it available to interested parties. The question i have is; i
13. Report Question [1]
I'm just beginning on my quest to discover my family's history and have just installed Cumberland Family Tree. I entered some basic information, including a marriage, divorce, and other marriage. When I run the reports, the divorce doesn't show up -- but the two marriages do. Why doesn't the divorce date show? Jan
14. Re: [CFTW] "Of" [1]
When preceding a place name like "of Youngstown, Ohio" it means the person lived in that area at one time in their life, but it does not necessarily mean they were born there, as this is normally placed in a birth place field. The extra commas are a product of other programs (PAF usually) - but I don't care for them and if I ever copy info from the web into my database I edit out all the commas and spell states out all the way. I try to keep my data looking clean. I even lower case the "Of" to "of" as I th

Ron, In a dutch relations family record circa 1986 have seen the + used as a crucifix as in death, * was used as birth and 00 used as married. 0/0 was used to indicate number of children. Hope this helps.
