The name;
Opinion is that is derived from the Gaelic "Dubh Glas"
pronounced Do-glas which means black or dark water and refers to the river
that runs through the area were the family originated, not uncommon for a
family to adopt the name of a prominent feature in their area.
The Clan:
The Douglas's originated as a lowland clan, settling in
an
area of South Lanarkshire, today known as Clydesdale, the word "clan" means
family and it worked on that pri

Hi April,
The marriage having taken place after 1855 would mean that the
certificate can be obtained from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ( it was a
legal requirement to register all events after that date ) From that you
will get his mother and fathers name, her mother and fathers name and where
they lived and both their occupations It will also give you their ages from
which you can search the OPR's for births, and to find family, knowing there
ages will let you search the pertinent census retu

Hi Steven,
Good to hear from you and thanks for your mail. You can post
any enquiries you may have to CLAN-DOUGLAS-L@rootsweb.com Usually people
researching their family tree ( surname Douglas ) post there, anticipating
some other researcher has a mutual ancestor, or can offer advice on how to
progress another's research.
As already remarked this is a fairly quite list, and so to
generate traffic I would welcome any enquiries or postings on the origins
and history of the Clan
Hi Dorothy, et all.
You ask some pertinent questions that might be helpful
to other people on this list. Let me try and explain.

Hi all,
My grandfather had started our family tree before his death although I
have only found his work of late. He only got as far back as the late
1800's and I'm hoping someone will have more information on my family
tree.
If you have any information about John Douglas who married Martha
Buchanan on Jan 11, 1889 I would appreciate receiving it. They would
have been born/married/died in Scotland although I'm not sure which area
- perhaps around Glasgow.
Thanks
April
Although we are not able to "prove" that our Robert of Norwalk is the
Robert, son of Francis and Isabel Seton (Winton) Stuart, there is
quite a bit of evidence such is the case.
Assuming this is correct, I have Francis' parents as Francis Hepburn
Stuart and Margaret Douglas. I have her born about 1563, and would like
a better date if possible.
I have Margaret Douglas as the daughter of David Douglas and Margaret
Hamilton.
I have David's parents as George Douglas and Elizabeth Douglas.

Hi Marlene,
It is really up to us in the DOUGLAS CLAN to post the queries and provide info on the list, in order for it to work. I am a guilty non-poster but I hope to make ammends for that shortly when I can find the time to tidy up my recodrs into some sort of order.
Meanwhile, thanks for your posting, (it mya start the ball rolling again) and good luck in your "!happy hunting" and kind regards.
Robert George (Bob) Douglas

Hi,
Do you have any more information on this family, had a look at the 1881
census and it throws up one family living at Lotus Cottage, NewAbbey as;
Robert Douglas--Head--Gardener--age 44--born Anwoth, Kirkcudbright
Agnes Douglas--Wife--age 29--born Troqueer, Kirkcudbright
Robert Douglas--Son--scholar--age 14--New Abbey, Kirkcudbright
Annie Douglas--Dau--scholar--age 8--Lochrutton, Ki
Hi Robert, and all
As administrator of this list I can assure you I am certainly
here. It saddens me to see people subscribing and then nothing! Surely if
you subscribe the first thing to do is post your interest's with the
intention of connecting with somebody of similar interests and as yet I have
never seen a post of this nature.
Not being a Douglas I originally posted to offer help to
anyone requiring background and history of the Clan Douglas, there was a
brief exchange of
