Wanted to share that the Allentown, PA Morning Call newspaper had an article
today (Sunday 8/29/99) on the authors of the book "The Kingdom of Coal"
(about PA's coalmining history). The authors are Donald L. Miller and
Richard Sharpless, both professors at Lafayette College. The two are also
working on a documentary in conjunction with the History Channel (air date
TBD).
The article can be found online at this address:

I'm new to this list and am looking for any information in regards to my
great grandfather, Lafayette Reynolds who worked in a coal mine at Back
Creek, Bell County, Kentucky until about 1910 when he and his family moved
to Marion County, Kentucky. He was born in (Josh) Bell County September 24,
1868 and married Emaline Sowder from Fonde, Whitley County, Kentucky in
1887. Emaline operated a country store at Back Creek and also sold
vegatables to the miners at Back Creek. My grandfather, Fayette was born at

My ancestors lived at Kyo which is near Stanley, County Durham, England. I
have recently found there was a large mining disaster there about 1870.
Does anyone know of a site that has more information on this?

Hi. I'm searching for information on my husband's father, Elmer J. CHORY,
born 7Apr1920, died 5Apr1951, buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Point Marion,
PA. His death was a result of injuries received while inspecting a coalmine
(possibly Shannon?) in Fayette or Greene County, PA, near the end of
Mar1951. I would appreciate any information or news articles. Thank you.

Hello listmembers,
I am new to the list, so if I mess up, please forgive me. I have been
told by an elderly lady that my Great Grandfather, Alonzo Ritchie was
killed in a mining accident in Scott County Virginia. The only thing I
have to go on is his last son was born June 18,1907 and his widow
remarried July 18,1908. If anyone has any info on Alonzo,or knows of any
newspapers that carried the info about this accident, it would be deeply
appreciated...
Thank you,
Drucilla
I am trying to get information on my grandfather, Harry Van Why & his father,
Peter Van Why. Harry Van Why was born 5/9/1887 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. His
parents were Peter & Sarah. Both father & son worked as miners. Harry was
married to Jane Lloyd on 3/25/14 in Miners Mills, Pa. They had 4 children,
Laura, Mary Jane, Peter & Elbert. I know he was alive at least until 1920
because my mother was born in 1917 & there were 2 children after her. I
would appreciate any help anyone can give, Mary-jane Nilse
Hello -
I know this is Coalminer's but I have a Thomas Richardson living in
Coniston Church Parish in 1861 who was listed as a copper miner. And, I
have found a Coniston Mine that mined copper. But, I am looking for the
death of Thomas Richardson somewhere between 1871 and 1881 where he
disappears. Does anyone have info on any copper mine disasters at that
time? Would appreciate any help at all.
Thanks. Grit
I just got back a letter from Harrisburg, Penna., USA after inquiring about
my great grandfather who died in a mining accident. I got very good details,
the date of the accident, the mine, his age, marital status, and injuries
sustained and cause. Martin Waple was injured Oct. 28, 1893 and died May 20,
1894. I got the death date from Clearfield County Court House in May when I
was there, discovering at that time that the accident happened 6 months
before, not in May. Anyway, the address to write is:
Hi , I'm a newbie in searching my roots, I understand my grandfather
worked in the mines but I don't know what capacityor what mine. Where do
I start? His name was Morgan Roberts b.1867 in Gallitzen,Pa.Lived in
South Fork,Pa. was told he died in an explosion in W.Va.or Va.?
There were at least three accidents at 'Maesteg'
1/ Garth Maesteg 4/6/1897, 2/ Oakwood 11/1/1872, 3/ Maesteg Merthyr
2/2/1872, and 4/ LLynvi 26/12/1863.

Hello fellow list members this is Keith and Carol Lee in Northampton, England
We are seeking information about Carol's grandfather
Tom George WILLIAMS (21/6/1879- 1/10/1942) b. Treorchy
Tom was a "coal hewer" and lived at 36, Lime St, Gorseinon. He was apparently injured in a
pit accident and had a leg amputated.
Could anyone point me in the direction of any documentary sources that remain since the pit was closed many years ago.

Hello Doris,
The U.K 1881 Census has a number of Elizabeth Ann Turners, born in
1873, under a variety of abbreviations. These are listed below
Jim, I enjoyed the information on mining disasters, thank you. Norma, it is
the Bureau of Mines in Illinois. Just call the main number in Springfield
and ask whether there is a listing under State of Ill. for the Bureau of
Mines. Otherwise, it would be State of Ill., Department of Natural
Resources, Bureau of Mines. By the way, every year it is my understanding
that the list of miners killed in the mines is taken to the state fair. It
should be getting about that time.

My gr-gr-grandfather, JAMES BRYDEN, and family was a pit sinker in a
coal mine in the Frizington - Arlecdon area according to the 1881
census. The 1896 list of Cumberland's mines only lists Moorside in
Arlecedon. Would there have been any other mines in the area that he
could have worked at? Is it possible to find out if there are any
records of employees? I'd like to know more about his life besides
just dates. (Which I still need to verify.)
Thanks for any assistance!
