Wanted to share that the Allentown, PA Morning Call newspaper had an article today (Sunday 8/29/99) on the authors of the book "The Kingdom of Coal" (about PA's coalmining history). The authors are Donald L. Miller and Richard Sharpless, both professors at Lafayette College. The two are also working on a documentary in conjunction with the History Channel (air date TBD). I'm new to this list and am looking for any information in regards to my great grandfather, Lafayette Reynolds who worked in a coal mine at Back Creek, Bell County, Kentucky until about 1910 when he and his family moved to Marion County, Kentucky. He was born in (Josh) Bell County September 24, 1868 and married Emaline Sowder from Fonde, Whitley County, Kentucky in 1887. His death was a result of injuries received while inspecting a coalmine (possibly Shannon?) in Fayette or Greene County, PA, near the end of Mar1951. Hello listmembers, I am new to the list, so if I mess up, please forgive me. I have been told by an elderly lady that my Great Grandfather, Alonzo Ritchie was killed in a mining accident in Scott County Virginia. The only thing I have to go on is his last son was born June 18,1907 and his widow remarried July 18,1908. I am trying to get information on my grandfather, Harry Van Why & his father, Peter Van Why. Harry Van Why was born 5/9/1887 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. His parents were Peter & Sarah. Both father & son worked as miners. Harry was married to Jane Lloyd on 3/25/14 in Miners Mills, Pa. They had 4 children, Laura, Mary Jane, Peter & Elbert. Hello - I know this is Coalminer's but I have a Thomas Richardson living in Coniston Church Parish in 1861 who was listed as a copper miner. And, I have found a Coniston Mine that mined copper. But, I am looking for the death of Thomas Richardson somewhere between 1871 and 1881 where he disappears. Does anyone have info on any copper mine disasters at that time? 12. Mining accident found [1]
I just got back a letter from Harrisburg, Penna., USA after inquiring about my great grandfather who died in a mining accident. I got very good details, the date of the accident, the mine, his age, marital status, and injuries sustained and cause. Martin Waple was injured Oct. 28, 1893 and died May 20, 1894. I got the death date from Clearfield County Court House in May when I was there, discovering at that time that the accident happened 6 months before, not in May. Anyway, the address to write is:

Hello fellow list members this is Keith and Carol Lee in Northampton, England We are seeking information about Carol's grandfather Tom George WILLIAMS (21/6/1879- 1/10/1942) b. Jim, I enjoyed the information on mining disasters, thank you. Norma, it is the Bureau of Mines in Illinois. Just call the main number in Springfield and ask whether there is a listing under State of Ill. for the Bureau of Mines. Otherwise, it would be State of Ill., Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Mines. By the way, every year it is my understanding that the list of miners killed in the mines is taken to the state fair. It should be getting about that time. Jodie BOWEN Russu Watergrd

My gr-gr-grandfather, JAMES BRYDEN, and family was a pit sinker in a coal mine in the Frizington - Arlecdon area according to the 1881 census. The 1896 list of Cumberland's mines only lists Moorside in Arlecedon. Would there have been any other mines in the area that he could have worked at? Is it possible to find out if there are any records of employees? I'd like to know more about his life besides just dates. (Which I still need to verify.) Thanks for any assistance!
