1. [COATES-L] Aquila Coates [1]
According to Hinshaw, Aquila Coates married to Rachel Pidgeon is the son of John and Hannah Coates according to the Quaker records he transcribed. In Truman, didn't it say he was the son of Moses and grandson of Moses Coates instead? LINDA COATE, Columbus, Ohio lcoate@ancestrees.com www.ancestrees.com
2. Re: [COATES-L] John Coats of Illinois [1]
John's wife's name is Martha in the 1850 census records for Greene Co., IL. Correspondents have said it's Martha Owdem but I haven't seen proof of that one yet. We have a second census that I've found from John's son John who states he was born in 1832 in SC and both of his parents were born in SC. It's the 1880 census for Greene Co., SC: John S. 4. Re: [COATES-L] PHILADELPHIA INHABITANTS--1745, 1746 [1]
This is a fascinating document. It could be the William Coates who was the son of Joan Sisom. He didn't die till 1749 as his son William also did. But I don't know whom the 3rd youngest William would be around the 1745 date. The grandson William wasn't born till 1741, so I don't think he'd be listed. I haven't found any other good match though. As for Joan's husband's name, I sure haven't see good documentation to back up his name being Thomas. I've changed that on my database to name u
5. [COATES-L] Correction - Not Larry message [1]
The previous email had Larry Coats name at the top. It was part of the quote at the bottom of the message but had scrolled off my screen and I did not notice it was at the top. Sorry!! 6. Re: [COATES-L] Coats chronology in Pasquotank, Perq., Edgecombe, Halifax Cos. NC [1]
Hi John, Knowing full well that my information if far from complete, if I were to make a tentative judgement(and I do mean tentative)on the marrige of Wm Coats of Rowan, I would tend to think that he married in or very near to Edgecombe Co. NC. And you are 100% correct in saying that you don't find Irby/Yerby as a surname in Rowan; but it does appear in two definitely related lines(e.g. Wilson Yearby Coates in Rowan and William Yerby Coats in Linc. Co. TN). From what I have seen so far, it would seem
7. Re: [COATES-L] Fwd: John of ILL. [1]
Dang John...I'm trying to give us good documentation for the Coats families...and I don't seem to be getting much cooperation here!! First of all, how do you know that obituary is incorrect? That family group sheet has three different first names for John's wife...how do we know which it is and that could be significant...I didn't see any documentation as to where the children were born....It also has the name as James Robert, well, I'll accept the name of Robert as having been added somewhere along
8. Re: [COATES-L] Rowan Co. Coateses and the line of Moses Coates [1]
This John married to Esther was the son of Samuel and Mary Saunders Coate of Hunterdon Co., NJ. He was actually born on 8 May 1699. Samuel was the son of the original immigrant in this line, John Coate or co. Sommerset, England and of Bucks Co., PA. Samuel was also the brother to William who was allegedly married to Rachel Ann Budd. The closest collaboration I have on her name is that she signed her name as Ann Coate as a witness to a marriage record in Kingwood M.M. in the 1730s if my memory se
9. [COATES-L] call for DNA testors [1]
Ok folks... Another call for test takers....if you have a male Coate, Coates, Coats in your line, regardless of who may or may not have already tested, it would be most beneficial for them to take the DNA test if they so choose....that includes lines that might connect to the same ancestor but through different children.... We are leaving it up to each line to submit their own test taker....so if you know of a Coate, Coates, Coats male, please ask them if they would consider taking the test for you,

12. [COATES-L] Mutations [1]
This is from the FTDNA message board...but most interesting... _________________________________________________________________ If the Male is married to say three wives and has a total of 24 children, what if any effect could this have on the DNA results? Could this increase the mutation rate within a shorter time? The answer is yes, it is entirely possible that in this scenario the mutation rate on the Y chromosome might increase. The male's ability to reproduce a perfect copy of his Y chromosome, a

Not sure I would agree with the NC part, especially after 1730 or so. It would be more of the exception then the rule. 14. Re: [COATES-L] DNA update [1]
Char; This is Burton Coats of Oklahoma. I paid for his test, and got his name from Kathleen Woodrow, who has done a lot of work on the Coats family. I'll contact her for Burton's earliest proven ancestor. On another subject, (OK, now noboby laugh) I was just perusing my copies of the "Coats Family Heritage", all three editions, which I first ordered in 1987, the last being in 1997. This operation was shut down by the Ohio Attorney General's office. However, I found all three to be quite interesting,

Greetings to all DNA test participants. I am the DNA tester who decended from Benjamin Coats born in North Carolina in 1807. After being booted off of this list a few months back I have no re-subscribed and have been reviewing the archives about the discussion of Benjamin's parentage. I will be sending a "family history" to Char so that she can link it to the DNA test number on the DNA page in the next week. I have been in touch with Deane and Larry already discussing these results but obviously Jo

22. [COATES-L] re: Matilda Coats b.c. 1755 Rowan Pt. 2 [1]
Hello John, Charlotte, Linda, and company, John, I have been musing/brooding over the Pasquotank Co. info that you posted in your response to my Matilda Coats finding, and while I may well be "out of the box" again, I was wondering if you would look over my speculations and see what you think.... First, regarding the John Coats that is on record in Pasquotank Co. NC in 1752 apparently was given that 700 ac. land grant in Halifax Co. NC in 1762 and MAY well have been residing in Edgecombe Co. NC in 1765: A
23. Re: [COATES-L] Fwd: Coats DNA [1]
I am by no means an expert here, but the Benjamin Coats b. 1807(who, BTW, also had a son, Abner)could well have been the son of Abner Coats, who, I think, married in 1792. I have a note that this Abner was b.c. 1768 but I don't know on what authority this date is cited. The Abner b.c. 1768, IF he is a son of Benj. Coats and Ann Longstreth, had brothers: Wm, James, and Benjamin(allegedly b.c. 1780). I think these same brothers had the sister, Cecily Burdett/Burnett Coats. May be off-base here as I am rel
24. [COATES-L] James of Edgefield and his son John Coates of Illinois [1]
Char and List; This will be the end of this thread as far as I'm concerned. Proof that John of Illinois is the son of James of Edgefield 1.
