I've been there and saw a historic marker sign at the very place where the meeting house stood, as well as a grave yard. Just off to the side of a road and back into the woods slightly not far, many tomb
3. Info on Land Records in SC [1]
Berkley and Craven Counties were divided by the Santee River. At the Borad and Saluda Rivers the dividing line became less defined, untill about 1769 where the dividing line was not clear, surveyors used the county names interchangeably. The normal porcess for securing a grant was to appear in person at the Governor's council in Charleston to "pray" for a warrant. The surveyor general then told the warrant and issued a precept for a survye. The deputy surveyor then made a plat. This is really interesti

If you recall...the Cherokee's had much friction within their ranks...and there was a land dispute involving

13. JESSE GOAT [1]
Karen, I don't think this Jesse Coat is the one that married Mary Johnson. Jesse that married Mary Johnson was the son of Marmaduke (173?-1822) and Mary Coppock Coate. Jesse was born in 1788 as verified in Bush River, SC Quaker records. His wife is Mary Johnson. His will was written in Miami Co., Ohio in 1837 and probated in August of that year. I don't actually have his will, so I'm open to learning why you believed this to be Jesse Coate who married Mary Johnson and Mary Coppock. I didn't have him

Well, Our little archive is getting off to a good start...lots of interesting docs in there and the research as well... I also want to make the following observations in reference to the land record indicis I received from SC (pardon the spelling error, there isn't a spell checker on excite mail :( ) First of all as was demonstrated by the Wm Coats deed that Barton signed...these indicis which I got are not comprehensive....that Wm Coats deed was in the County deed records for Newberry County, the SC Arc
