I have a copies of six portraits of Coffin ancestors who lived at Portledge
Manor, from the time period 1639 through 1703. Maybe one of their
ancestors included James Coffin. I was at Portledge Manor a few years ago,
and it is fabulous!!
Thanks!!

Does anyone have any information on Richard Coffin who was "High Sheriff of
Devon?" He was married to a lady names Anne Prideaux. Anne was born about
1665 and is the sister of Humphrey Prideaux. ~ Gloria

Coffin is one of the major surnames on Nantucket Island, as you know.
This link takes you to the N. material I have transcribed so far. More to come, including more info on early settlers, land owners and some probates....that is after I finish the N. Genealogies.
Check back often.

This is an October 2002 post, which I, Violet O. Guy, made via the List Owner David Sylvester, because it was 6 pages in length & it had been done in Rich Format, which Rootsweb Server could not accept.
It involved William & Priscilla (Paddock) Coffin's son, Mathew Coffin, [Nantucket>NC] m. Hannah (Anna) Mendenhall, d/o Jame
I found the following information on Elizabeth (Harding) Coffin. Can anyone
tell me anything about this Coffin family? Thanks ~ Gloria
"Elizabeth Coffin (b. 1625) is daughter of Henry Harding of Somerset. She
married John Coffin, son of Richard Coffin, High Sheriff of Devon. She later
married Hugh Prust of Gorven after John Coffin died."

Has anyone seen any documentation of a Jacob Coffin (or Coffing) in Devon,
England, born around 1665/1675? He came to America on the ship "The Desire"
on 23 Jun 1686, as a servant to James and Jeane Shaddock. Cliff Ocheltree
has done a lot of good research on Jacob in America, but I haven't read
anything concerning him in England. I would guess that might tie into the
same family from whch Tristram descended. He was a Quaker; perhaps he
appears in the Quaker records.
Hi everyone,
I have extracted this information from the COFFIN of Portledge Family Tree,
from the Devon Visitations.

marriage settlement of Katherine, dau of Testator ?? Jane Holwell Spinster,

James Coffin was supposedly born about 1514 in Portledge Manor, Brixton,
Devonshire, England. His wife, Mary Cole, was supposedly born about 1516 in
Knoston, Devonshire, England. They were supposedly married about 1534 in
Portledge Manor, Brixton, Devonshire, England. Does anyone have any information
about James and his wife Mary? I would like to find any documentation that
might confirm their births or their marriage. I'm also looking for the names of
any of their children. Thanks much!
I have been transcribing a lot of Coffin data, and this pg has some:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ma/coffin.htm
Scroll down to where the Tristram Coffin part starts. They say they can
trace back to the time of Wm. the Conqueror, but then don't include the
data, which is too bad. It's probably more family tradition than anything:
somebody may once have successfully accomplished this, then the 'word' came
down through the generations, but not the actual data.
