Don,
My book of the CW letters arrived from Amazon.com a couple of weeks ago. I
have thoroughly enjoyed reading them and am envious that Grandfather
Elisha's letters were not saved. He must have written some before he was
interred in Andersonville Prison. Anyway, thanks for sharing the information
with the Coffin list.

Hello Bonnie--
Good to hear from you again. I, too, have enjoyed reading through the
letters. For one thing, it has answered my question about how a member of
a Quaker family regarded the civil war. I don't detect much pacifist
sentiment in William's words, especially when speaking about the
"copperheads" (rebel sympathizers back home). It's also interesting to
note how mundane most of the correspondence is -- more concerned with
scrounging for food than with fighting for the most part. Incidentally,

Dear David--
My recent post to the Coffin List (Re: William Coffin's Civil War
letters) was made in error. I realized as soon as I hit the "Send" button
that I had sent an essentially personal message to the whole list. I had
exchanged several private notes with Bonnie Lyons on this subject, and
did not look carefully at the header on this note before I answered it.
Even though the note technically was on subject, my personal comments
and opnions went beyond what I should have shared with the entire li
