I'm so sorry.
We can't find him because he died in 1832, not 1882.

Thank you for looking. One of the problems with researching OSTRANDER is that they reuse the same first names over and over again. I do know the limitations of the early census records. It's possible the chidren were raised by other family members, but I have no way of knowing who. The 9 year old was born in Bedford NY, not anywhere near the NY OSTRANDERs you see there. I have wondered if these children were orphaned early on, so could have been raised by other family. If any of the OSTRANDERs you found in
The bills referred to in the alert about records were brought up last year,
and died in committee. I went in to read them, and it's nothing to worry
about. They may try it again, but right now, we can all take a deep sigh of
relief!!
Ann
Do you know the children's names?

Sue,
I checked every census year after 1830 using a wild card search and the
Soundex index but I didn't have any luck finding Chester either. It's very
unusual that a family would miss ALL the census years. Is it possible that
he could have been enumerated by another name?....did he have a middle
name?...could he have left CT?

Frances born 1827
Mary Adelia born 1830 (I do have the daughter's census records from 1850 on)

This is wonderful! It sounds really promising. I certainly wouldn't dismiss your results on that birthplace basis since I know old records differ. I have one of those children born in Bedford and I know they have other NY connections in any case. It would be great to find them. I'll look at your images. Thank you very much.

Thank you,
Based upon Marilyn's comments about Ostranders in New York, I searched the
1850 (all names) index for both Jacob and Abigail Ostrander. One of the
families Marilyn mentioned includes both a Jacob and wife Abigail Ostrander
along with children of approximately the correct age.
However, the 1850 census says that the children were all born in New York.
Rather than dismiss this coincidental family constellation, I thought I
would take a look in the 1840 and 1830 census. Sure enough, the family
shows up in

Debi -
It took me a while to look at your images. We have a new computer that we are still getting loaded with software so I am learning as I go. The images were worth looking at because of the things you point out, but unfortunately the children don't match. That's too bad.
One of the children I have, John, is in the 1850 CT census and married to Mary. The family you found has a 6 year old John, so not likely the same family. It sure is tantalizing, though. The other child I know is Jacob W., who was bor
Yes, I do. John was born in 1821. The later census records have him born in CT, but I have one that has him born in NY. Now I have his death record that has him born in Bedford. I know that Bedford NY is very close to Fairfield Co., so it seemed logical to find him there. The other is Jacob W., who all census records have born in CT. His death record is no help because he outlived everybody else. Every other OSTRANDER male seems to be named John, so it's really hard to sort them out. Jacob is used a lot too
