2. [CUL] Joyce family [1]
I was deleting-before-reading tonight (Fri) and realised that my initial thought that I have no interest in Joyce is wrong. I do, but not the usual interest. Albert Aldred Joyce lived in my house from 1923 to 1926. He was Head Teacher at Threlkeld School and left to go to the Dyon School, Distington from whence came his successor William James "Pal" Moore. He appeared to have problems with the school managers particularly over building maintenance, heating and bell ringing. I am writing the history

None more so than 'Black', which originally= means ' wan, pale or colourless'. Technically quite correct but 'black' is= now used and meant to be used as ' coloured'. Who decided that and when ?? 5. RE: [CUL] senogles family [1]
Nick As a first call you could try the IGI, available through www.familysearch.org I just did a quick look and there are over 200 Senogles or similar as it picks up similar sounding names. There are many in the Grasmere and in fact first on the list is Aaron Senogle Christened 1 Feb 1763 in Grasmere. I have no idea if he will turn out to be a relation. In that particular case the entry refers to the Bishops Transcripts from Grasmere so it is likely to be reasonably correct but in time you will need to check
6. [CUL] Dacre/Daker STOWBRIDGE/CROSS!!!!! [1]
Hi All This is my first posting to this particular list!! We have been searching for CROSS' for the last 2 years and have very recently found out that our CROSS' were really STOWBRIDGE's!!! Our Henry CROSS was really born Henry STOWBRIDGE in 1875 and he married Mary Jane MILES (b. 1862). His parents were William STOWBRIDGE (b. 1851) and Margaret THOMAS (b. 1851). 7. Re: [CUL] Puddler? [1]
Don't know if this really helps or not! A puddler worked clay into puddle, worked with puddle to make things water tight eg. canal walls, or worked in puddling iron! Beats me, but if you want a good site for these old occupations, try http://cpcug.org/user/jlacombe/terms.html All the best, Pauline in OZ
8. [CUL] Boggles and Fairies [1]
. . Carelessly onomatopoeic? Be careful, Christmas is almost here, you will get sticks and coals in your stocking. We South Texas yanks don't have boggles, we have bogey men. They'll getcha if you don't watch out. So where was the Fairy Rock? ooOoOoooOooooOOOOOooo, Sarah >(is your boggle like our oodle?) No, I was being carelessly onomatopoeic (as least I think I was). Boggle is just such a splendid name for ghost. >So TELL us about a few of the ones with names?? There are a few stories at: h

10. [CUL] RE: Gretna Green [1]
Thank you to all who replied to my inquiry concerning the elopement and the marriage of my great great grandparents (John Knight and Jane Chambers), in Gretna Green, Scotland in March 1844. To those who had questions - Yes, I have a scanned copy of the original marriage certificate from Gretna. Family lore states they were married in the infamous "Blacksmith Shop" and used a 'ring' provided by the blacksmith/priest. I also have a copy of their second marriage in Wigton during July 1844. 13. [CUL] How do you say Dacre? [1]
Can someone provide me with the correct pronunciation for "Dacre," the name of the Cumbrian village, castle, and family? My instinct is to pronounce the "Da" as in "dad" and the "cre" as in "creed" or else as in "crate." However, in some documents I've seen the name spelled "Daker," which suggests that it might rhyme with "baker" and "acre." Yoo hoo! Y'all recuperated fom the holiday? In finishing up my family history book, I came across xerox copies of pages of the Cumberland Pacquet that I forgot I had! It only dates back to 1774, but has all kinds of birth, death, marriage notices, and general gossip. Mine came thru the Cumbria Archive Service, whitehaven.record.office@cumbriacc.gov.uk, website www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives. I remember seeing Wigton mentioned. xxx, Sarah ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill & Helen Strickland
17. [CUL] New subscriber (new address) [1]
Hello again to everyone! We are struggling through changes in our ISP here in Canada, so thought I should restate my research interests. My grandfather John SCOTT was born in the Penrith area and he married Elizabeth CAMERON of Maryport/Dereham? c.1899. Elizabeth was the daughter of a Thomas Cameron, and John the son of John for several generations. I think Sheila Middleton has identified my grandfather in the 1881 census but am not positive. The last known UK contact many years ago was a Jack SPARKS who

Hello everyone, I am thinking of purchasing the 1848 Slaters Directory on CD from Rod Neep books. Does anyone have a copy of this book to do a look up for me, I would like to know if my GGG Grandfather is mentioned. He is (was!!) William BEST, a Yeoman, of Fenton Lane Head, Hayton by Brampton, I have seen him mentioned in a different publication in our local library and I am hoping he will show up in this one also. Obviously the book will be a must if he is mentioned. Margaret Hall Wallsend _______
