Yes, contact a funeral director in the area. You would have to make
arrangements with them to set the stone where you wanted it set. Go online and go to
the county you want. "With a little work you can find who you need.

There is a bill in the legislature in Jefferson City that will restore the
CSA flags to there rightful place on the flag poles at Pilot Knob and
Higinsville. Pleas contact your Senator and Representatives and ask for
their support of this bill.
Hope that this post is o.k. on this board. Seems like some of the other CW
boards like to be controlled by Hitler type people that claim that the flag
issue has no place on that particular board.

What range of cost is involved to set a stone? One of the Thayer
funeral homes was owned by a related family, don't know about now.

Not all funeral homes will do what Duncans did.. My family are very close
friends of the Duncans. They are a rare breed and just super. They are a

It's my understanding that veterans of any war are eligible for this service, regardless of how much time elapsed, and that includes CSA veterans. I attended a service last year for a Rebel who'd been b

Carl,
I thank you so very much for the info! I now have a starting point for further research. I had run across Freeman's regiment, but never seen a roster or muster roll for the unit. I mistakenly listed Richard Jones' son as Richard Jr in the initial posting......it should have been William Jones. He served with William Turley in the 11th MO Cavalry. I shouldn't do this from memory...I do have it written down.
Can a copy of THE CIVIL WAR IN SHANNON AND CARTER COUNTIES still be purchased, and from wh
There is a Roberson, Robberson, Robertson Monument Co. ... Something like
that....[Carl, what is the name of that MONUMENT Company in Thayer?] who
made a monument for me, took it to Randolph Co., AR and set it, all for
$100. It wasn't a Civil War stone, but I am betting that they know how to
make one.

Can anyone tell me how to get a Civil War headstone set for my

location.

Hey Pat'
You don't need a funeral home to set the stone. We will do it
for you. When I wrote initially did not realize your ancestor was
from Oregon County. What is his name ? I have an Oregon Co.
Cemetery book and can find which cemetery he is buried in.
Now- getting the stone. When ordering have it shipped to me.
VA will probably ship from the nearest approved quarry. There
is one in Ava, MO. at least I believe they have shipped stones
to me in the past. There are several things that we can do to help

John,
The book is available from the West Carter County Genealogical Society at
Van Buren, Mo. I seem to have lost the full address but Van Buren is a small
town so the zip would be all that would be needed. I can check at our
library and get the full address. It is a very interesting read for anyone
interested in genealogy of that period. It solved a couple of puzzles for me
but also created a few but isn't that what keeps this thing interesting.

Go to your local funeral director and take proof of your civil war andcestors
service and they will order a stone from the government at no cost to you and
all you have to do is pay to set it. It does not matter whether your ancestor
is union or confederate. I know because I did this in Mountain View Missouri
charles
Just out of curiosity, did they go from a "traditional" headstone to the military one, or were they unmarked altogether?

Pat,
I've gotten a few headstones for union vets and Indian War vets in unmarked graves. I went to the local Department of Veteran Affairs. They'll give you a form to fill out and send in. It will come free of charge. You just have to promise to see that it is set in the ground.

Ona,
The 8th Mo. Infantry CSA was organized and recruited at Camp Holmes,
Thomasville, Mo, commanded by Colonel Mitchell. Since it was the
northernmost confederate recruiting point at the time, recruits came from as
far north as the Missouri river so if your John A. Warren lived within that
area it could well be him.

I have researched (over 10 years) and
Nancy,
Thanks for the info on ordering "The Civil War in Shannon and Carter Counties." My father spent much of his youth in Carter County, at Midco, and related a few stories passed down through family members about partisan activity in the area. There's no documentation, but I'll contact him and have him repeat the stories, and then I'll post them. Again, Thanks so much.

Fellow Ozarks researchers,
I'm researching family who lived in the Pike Creek area of Carter County, present day Fremont MO area. Family lore says that Richard Jones Sr., Jr., and William Turley from the area joined the Confederate Army. Starvation rations in Arkansas encouraged Richard Jones Jr. and William Turley to desert, and join the Union Army. They joined the 10th MO Cav (US), and served out their enlistments together. Richard Jones Sr. was supposedly captured and became a "galvanized Yankee". I
