1. [CZ] Re: Family Research and Collateral Connections [1]
Dear Czech Researchers, Don't forget the all-important rule: Ask older relatives! I am (fortunately - I've been told often enough) starting my genealogy research while many of my grandparents are still alive. My maternal grandmother's maiden name is WOLETZ, and that's the Czech line. My great-grandparents emigrated to Wisconsin in 1906, and my grandmother was born here in the States. Well, when I started asking questions, Grandma knew some of the answers. Alt-Moletein, Austria was where her family wa

In the case of my grandfather's brother, Louis (Alois) Kadera, his sponsor is listed in his naturalization papers as being one Henry Kimmett. Louis was naturalized in 1901 in St. Joseph, Missouri. My grandfather and his 2 brothers came over seperately from 1890-1919 and they had a sponsor. I have wondered how the man who sponsored them knew them--if they had been friends or neighbors in Austria-Hungary. They all settled in St. Joseph, Missouri. 7. [CZ] Re: locating our ancestors' beginnings [0.981117]
To our splendid list-owner, Elaine, I'll respond first to your suggestion that we discuss, in this quiet time of the year, how our ancestors came and how we knew where they came from. I was so much luckier than most, because my father immigrated in 1889 when he was just 13 years old, but he was so lucky too because he came to relatives of his mother's in Chicago. They took him in, cared for him with love, and when he reached 18, he set out on his own, working for his "foster" father in his pharmacy

It is a wonderful resource, but as with any secondary source, be careful, and verify by going back to the actual source cited. The information it contained concerning my ancestors was not consistent with the actual copies of ships lists where I found them.
9. Re: [CZ] Re: Knoell/Langer/Spiller/Pohl [0.981117]
It is interesting to see the LANGR name on this list and rewarding for me; my fifth great-grandmother was ANNA LANGROVA of the village of Dolni Cermna, Bohemia. She would marry Pavel Silar of the village of Nepomuky, nearby. This was most probably in the 1700's and they were Bohemian. Regards, Kathleen From: janadams@aztec.asu.edu (JANICE L. 10. RE: [CZ] Family Origins [0.981117]
Elaine- I am researching families from both Bohemia and Galicia (Ukrainian and Ruthenian ancestry). The CAPEK relatives from Bohemia have been a text book case for genealogy research. I began with a death certificates to learn parents names, found their parents death certificates, found them in the census from 1900-1920, etc. I have been able to collect BMD records on almost every family member. However, the CAPEKs immigrated in 1893 (per the census records) and I was not able to find their passenger lis

I am curious as I have heard that Schindler is a surname that is as common in Europe as Smith is here? Any truth do you think? I would also appreciate a lookup from the Baca books on Anton Schindler who came over about 1872 and his sister Josephina. Anton came over supposedly with wife Anna and son Anton. Also on a Henry Voigt although I am not sure of whenor from where he came. You guys are so great. I belong to many lists and this is by far the most helpful and informational of them all! Thanks a

Our family tree has the unusual name BULENA. They came from the Chrudim area to Chicago in the late 19th century. I have been trying to find possible relatives in the Czech Republic. While looking through Czech websites (I'm just starting to learn the language), I found a reference to Jaroslav Bulena, born 1953, an athlet in the March 25, 2000 Prague International Marathon. Apparently he represented the "Spartak Hlinsko". How could I find out more about Jaroslav and how to contact him? Appreciate any

I am looking for the ship on which my great grandmother, Mary JUNKER, possibly her mother in law, Barbara JUNKER and her three small children, Antonia, Barbara and Annie travelled to New York around 1885. I believe they travelled alone since my great grandfather, Josef JUNKER appears to have arrived in 1883. They were Austrian, or so I believe. The name has also sometimes appeared as YOUNKERS. Any help, greatly appreciated. Happy New Year to all from "blizzardy" Mendham, NJ, USA Jeanne

25. [CZ] Re: Leo Baca's books [0.981117]
Dear Jerry Tichachek - I like your attitude - good for you! I had e-mail correspondence with Mr. Baca re finding a relative whose name was German, but definitely came from Austria. Upon my inquiring if he would pick up such a German name - Guertler - he replied that it would be picked up ONLY if Mr. Guertler stated he came from Bohemia or Moravia. My Mr. Guertler was not in his books, so obviously he must have declared his country of origin as Austria, as he forswore allegiance to Emperor Franz
