My g-grandparents settled in NY City-have found them on the 1900 census. I cannot find them on the 1880 census and I know they immigrated in 1873 from Bohemia- what port would they have come in to and how would they have come into NY? If their direction was New York wouldn't they have taken a ship directly the New York Port? I have never seen a posting from anyone on the town called Msene,Czech. This is where my ancestors lived. I have pictures of the homes that some were born at and lived at. Hi. I am looking for information on the Czech portion of my family tree. Would it be possible for someone with access to the Baca books and/or "Czechs in America" to look up the following names: FRANK FRUS (born 3/9/35 in Brezinka, Bela pod. Bezdezem, Bohemia), PAUL CERNY (dob unknown in Bohemia?), ANNA DRITCH (dob unknown in Bohemia?) and MARY KOZDERKA (dob unknown in Bohemia?). I'm not sure if CHOKA is a Bohemian name or not. Anyone out there in Czechy look up for me to see if there are any DVORAK's listed in church records in the town of Dub, a small town southwest of Prague?? I'm specifically trying to find either Mary DVORAK/DWORAK or Wencl DVORAK who came to the USA around the year 1872. Wencl was born in 1851 and Mary was born in 1854. Hi, Jean. The name Apolena or Apolonie (accent over the e in the first instance, and over the second o in the second instance) was used by the Czechs. It was probably derived from the Greek. The English equivalent ia Apolionia. Don't knock grandma; she was ok! Mahanoy City is very close to Shenandoah, PA. in an East Central coal mining region. Immigrants who went there usually went to work in the coal mines. Shenandoah has a remarkable collection of ethnic churches that were started by various groups of immingrants -- a Slovak Catholic church, a Polish National Church, a Polish Catholic Church, a Lithuanian Catholic Church, Greek (Orthodox?) Church, an Irish Church, a German Church, etc., as well as a number of protestant churches (English and German).
