It's so nice to see my family name posted on the list. It's so very
rare!! Thanks to Gus E. I was sent Ginni Swantons website recently
regarding the surname JAGOE which lists births, deaths and marriages in
the late 1700's and early 1800's. I'm having some trouble printing the
whole thing off because of the layout. Maybe someone can help me with
that....... Maybe this site will help us connect the dots.

Hello fellow Corkers,
My name is Robert (Bob) William Walsh and I am a new addition to the
County Cork email list. My Great Grandfather, Michael Walsh, was born in
Middletown some time in 1840 and I am just starting to trace his roots in
Ireland. He emigrated to the USA prior to becoming a US citizen on June 26,
1860. I know nothing about him prior to that date. I would greatly
appreciate hearing from anyone with information or tips on tracing his roots
in County Cork. Thanks for being there and

Dear Judy:
Thank you for your generous offer to do lookups. Are there any Russell's in
the City Directory? My understanding is that Russell was not that common of
a name in Cork County at this time. I am trying to find out if there were
any Russell's and if the list is small could you please let me know all of
them. I am searching for my great-grandfather's [Edmund David/E.D./Edmond
David] father, last name Russell, possible first name Thomas. Thank you
again.

Hi Everyone,
I am seeking information on HALL, John M. b. Youghal, Ireland 12 May
1836. Arrived Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada 1844, m. Ellen Augusta
THORNTON 20 November 1860. Lived at 107 Prospect Street, Sherbrooke
when he died 31 January 1922.
Thanks for reminding me about that tradition Amy, it reminds me of when I was small. The reason is that - at least in our house, the youngest of the family lit the candle. And that was me!

I have James Roney in Baltimore Co., Md. during Revolutionary War with
notation of his birth 1752 in Leinst'r, Ireland. Supposedly the Roney
family along with my Flanagan's (brothers: Patrick, Terrance and John) came
from Cork Co., Ireland. They were all in Baltimore Co. during 1778 (took
Oath of Allegiance), then in Mercer Co., Ky. by 1790 and on to Washington
Co., Ky. by 1800 where they died.
Any input would be appreciated.

Fellow Listers:
Does anyone know whether the name McAULIFFE would have been found in Cork City
in the 1840's, or rather just in the Newmarket-Kanturk area? Am desperate to
identify my ancestor, Timothy McAuliffe, and there were a slew of them born
around the same time in Newmarket-Kanturk.
Also, has anyone ever heard of the first name, Eda? Not sure if it is male or
female, a nickname or what??? The person who signed the death certificate of
my ggrandfather, Eugene Clifford, was an Eda Clifford, and no one
When my g-grandfather first came to Ontario from Ireland, he was known as
Owen Coskery. Later, he was known as Eugene Cosgriffe. His son Eugene was
known as "Hughey."
In a church record I noticed a Hugh Storm entered as Eugenii Storm in one
place and Hughgo Storm in another. Is Hugh a variant of Eugene and thus Owen?

What records are available for Cork in the period 1800-1838?
(I have heard that a lot of records were lost in a fire in the 1920's.)
Are there any emigration records for around 1837/1838?
Where would someone be likely to depart from if they were heading to

There is a good web site that will help you or anyone who might be looking

names of the churches etc and there locations in each parish. This is what
they tell me.

there was a group of Quaker families living in Moate, Co Westmeath and also
in Dublin.
Dont know how persecuted they were in England as wasn't there a dispensation
for Quakers and Jews to have there own marriage services etc. when everyone
else had to conform to the established church ( C of E) ?
When I was small, my mother had the kids put our shoes outside of the bedroom
door and in the morning they'd be filled with apples and oranges. I think we
did this on St. Nicholas' night not Christmas Eve. I'm not exactly sure of
the significance, and although my mother was born in Ireland she spent a good
part of her young adulthood in England. So, I'm not sure if this is an Irish
Christmas tradition or not. Did anyone else do something simliar?
