That is true and I was jumped on my private email from same people that
sorely dissagree on here. I think although new that is called slamming. If
I posted what they wrote it would make things much wors. This below was
the only start of all. This innocent posting of Donnacha's. She did not
desearve this. No one does. Regards to list , follow your intuition.

If you are talking about Irish civil registration, there
were fines for registering late. Therefore, people would give later
birth dates to avoid the fines. This resulted in it looking as
if the child were baptised before it was born.

Molly,
Whilst Rea is (possibly) going to far in suggesting that the blight was
intentionally introduced into Ireland there is certainly ample evidence of
an intentional genocide as understood in interpretations of such today. I
presume you haven't taken the time to read the evidence presented in the
curriculm I mentioned. If you want to accuse such bodies as the United
Nations of 1948 of 'taking things to a ridiculous extreme' then you will
have to do more than declaim. Arguments are not won by simply fi
Carol,
"We were not there and can only surmise the honest truth" is the we were not
there argument. If we hold to this argument then we are saying that we can
only know of anything if we are there, obviously this would be to deny the
possibility of knowing 99.99% of what we claim to know so either it's a
false argument or we don't know anything.

I have noticed a lot of requests lately that ask
for basic information or addresses, etc. Want to remind
you that if you are on the web, just type
cyndislist.com
for any kind of genealogical link. There is an enormous
section under Ireland and North Ireland and then under
that you will find Cork.

The baptismal date is more concrete than what is placed on a civil
death certificate. A question to ask yourself is, if the person who died
doesn't even know what his/her exact date of birth was how is
the person who is burrying them supposed to know ? My dad's
cousin found out his true birth date when he went to collect
his Old Age Pension. His mother lied about his age when he was
in school, so that he could get out before the kids his own age
to be home in time to help on the farm. Imagine someone

Hi All,
Now that I have had to give up on any records from the Commission of Irish
Lights for my Gt Gt Grandfather, Thomas Ahern, B.?, Co Cork. I have found
that he served in the British Military? In the Crimean War. He was away
from his home when my Gt grandmother was born, Feb 2, 1852. He might have
enlisted from St John's Point, Co Down where he was Keeper of the Light.
Anyone know where I might look for records of such? Thanks & cheers,
Sharon from Montana

This is my first posting to this list. Anyone having hints on how to
find this family, please let me know. Did Ireland have an 1881 census?
How bout Griffith's Valuation?
All I know is that Daniel O'BRIEN was born 6 Jan 1839 in County Cork.
His wife we believe to be Mary Ellen BARNET. No dates known for her and
our presumption is that she died in Ireland before Daniel came to the US.
Known children all born in Ireland:
Honora b 29 Sept 1861 Came to US in 1883, arriving in NYC, but we
haven't found

This is the potato famine I believe. I read and later saw on tele that the

Folks,
PLEASE be aware that your subject line is -very important-!
Many of us are on many lists, and only read messages if the subject line
interests us. Therefore seeing subject lines which say
Re: Listname digest #whatever
tells us -nothing- of what is in that message.. and will probably lead
to your message being deleted without being read by the majority of
persons on the list. Digest users are particularly guilty of this.
Again, this goes to basic mailing list use. We want everyone to get all

Ann ALLMAN, born Bandon c.1838 - emigrated to South Australia and married
Thomas PICKETT.
Her father was William ALLMAN, a schoolteacher, who I believe also emigrated

Ann was my g-g-grandmother, and any tips on finding more about her early
life in Co. Cork would be gratefully received.
Thank you. Alison Martyn (in West Sussex)
Folks,
Many of you, particularly those on digest, are not changing your subject
line when replying to messages... and so we're getting far too many
posts with subject lines of "Re: CountyCork Digest whatever" which does
-not- tell what the post is, and which leads to people either having to
read the message to see if anything of interest -might- be in there, or
more often just deleting it without reading it, cheating you out of any
possible help on your query by many fellow listers.

Sorry, I've lost the e-mail address of the person who asked me about the
O'Neil family members buried in the cemetery at St Pat's in Seneca.
The answer to your question is: I really don't know if all the O'Neil's in
that cemetery came from my family. All I know for sure is that the markers
named
Peter J., Jeremiah, Margaret, Catherine and Daniel (last two b. in Ireland)
are belong to our family members.

Carol,
I have never yet heard of anyone claiming that 'there are two sides to every
story' when discussing the Holocaust of the Jews, which would of course be
to introduce some hint of justification for the Nazi killers. Why should it
be ok to do so in the case of the Irish and the Famine?
One of the reasons it is so difficult to find your ancestors is the same as
the difficulty Jewish people and the descendants of African slaves face.

Hi...I'm new to your list and I'm working on my COUGHLIN line from Wintergrass Hill. Mary Dorothy (Coughlin) Smyth was the daughter of Daniel Coughlin and Margaret (O'Shaughnessy) Coughlin. She was born in 1877 either in St. John, N.B., Canada or Wintergrass Hill, Cork. I'm not sure when they/she emigrated to Canada. Any replies will be appreciated. Thanks Jim
