I want to thank both Barbara and Myra for pointing me to Dr. Craig's book. I
do have a copy. My real question was the one that everyone answered about
"patrynomics." I didn't remember that there was a discussion of it in the
Craig book. Thank you all for reminding me.
Appreciatively,
Carole
Dear Carole --
The naming pattern is called patronymics and was used in Scandinavian
countries and The Netherlands (and some areas of northern Germany) into the
19th century. The custom in America died out by the early 18th century as
our Dutch and Swedish lines became anglicized with fixed surnames.
In Dr. Craig's "1671 Census of the Delaware," (pp. 26-27) is the notation
that Magdalena Skute (sister of Johan and Christina -- the orphans of
Captain Sven Skute) was born 25 March 1660 and married Peter Ra

Antoinette, are your Stiddem's related to Stille's? I am a Still/Stille
descendant who is having some trouble making the connection to the original
Delaware Stille settlers. My great grandfather and grandmother always told
us we were descended from them, but no family Bible old enough exists to
complete the trail. I think I have a one-to-three generation missing piece
between the 1693 Stilles (from an old census) and the 1837 Stills of my
family. The five generations that I have been able to track

According to my research, Peter Rambo, who married Magdelena Skute, was the
s/o Peter Gunnarson Rambo and Britta Mattsdotter. Peter was born 17 Jun 1653 in
Kingsessing, and died 12 Dec 1729 in Philadelphia County, Pa. Magdelena was born
25 Mar 1660 and died aft. 1729. This information was taken from Peter S. Craig's
book "The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware", page 27.
I would be happy to email you a Word File on this family (50 pages &

Do you have listings for the FRAME family of Delaware, all I have been able

Dear Jerry,
You have been very kind to send me so much information on the Swede's church.
I am actually going to take my vacation in the last week in August and am
going to Wilmington to try to find some ancestral trails!
I am looking for Stille/Still, Cloud, Walton, and maybe McCullough. It
should be a great week. I may be a more informed conversationalist after I
get back. Perhaps I'll still need to take you up on your offer to help do
lookups when I return!

Hi Listers,
Kathleen Burnett has graciously offered to take over as listowner
for this list. So I'll say good-bye as listowner, but I'll remain a lurker
on the list -- who knows, someday I may dust off my DE records
and start researching my DE ancestors in earnest.
It's been fun,

Hi..
You might want to take a look at the website for Old Swedes Church. There is
a link on the website on how to request research on people included in the
church records.
Hope this helps,

Hello Everyone-
Would anyone who has the Peter Craig books or others be able to tell me if it
covers the VAN DEVER clan at Wilmington's Old Swedes?
I have a Keziah VanDever, b. 1791 who married a John White in Dec. 1810 at
Old Swedes. The marriage is documented there, but Keziah's birth/baptism is
not. I'm told she was born during a period of itinerant preachers who came
and went without leaving much record documentation.
The family removed to PA late 1817-18 and I have records from there on, but

Good luck. Peter is THE expert on pre1700 Delaware history.

Yes, Mary who married Benjamin Enoch was d/o of Andrew Stalcup Jr. Try to
find the book THE STALCUP FAMILY HISTORY 1641-1986 by Earl E. Jones. I only
bought the first volume and index as all the earliest Stalcups and the early
history are in Volume I.
