5. Re: [DK] Learning to speak Danish? [1]
Leslie, Maybe you could try some of the other words and leave the name of the capitol until you need it when you visit there. My experience is that particular name is pronounced quite differently depending on which part of Denmark is home--but it sounds like you're hearing it correctly, including the glottal stop. We've been brainwashed by "wonderful, wonderful Kopenhagen", set to music. Have fun in the learning. After a while you'll get a feel for it. Edna Rasmussen in sunny so. California ----- Ori
6. Re: [DK] Bitsch family [1]
Hi Jim, Jacob has been a traditional and continually used Bitsch name - at least since 1578 in Rheinland Pfalz (Germany). The first Bitsch in Denmark - Johann Peter Bitsch (arrived in 1760) also named one of his boys Jacob (b.1785) and it has repeated ever since. We even see Jacobsen - i.e. son of a Jacob - from the descendants of Johann Peter! This family's earlier history is incredible - well worth looking in to. There is plenty about this on the net - but in Danish - and, thanks to Helen in Boulder, we n

Your description fits the garden plots we observed outside Hildesheim, Germany when we were visiting a relative of my wife. We strolled through the paths one Sunday afternoon and I remember the friendly atmosphere and ivitations to stop for tea and cookies. The cottages were just large enough for sleeping and a kitchenette. To be outdoors seemed to be the purpose for otherwise urban apartment dwellers. Hi Della, I have added the "missing link" in your very well translated sentence below. "Kirkeladen' may require a bit explanation. You are right to suggest it is a 'church barn' - it is!!! 'Kirkelade': In the days the local farms paid tithe's(tenth) to the church in form of grown farm crop, instead of money. "Lade" is a barn or storage building for farm crop such as grain, corn, etc. "Kirkelade"='Kirke+lade' (Church+ barn) was originally the storage building for paid 'tithe'! In the 18th century, these
