1. [DEV] Non-Gen [1]
A non-genealogy question from a hungry ex-Devonian! Please reply off-list: jjones@autobahn.mb.ca A recipe, please, for making Devonshire Cream from scratch. Note: we do not get milk with cream on the top but can buy cream alone which I hope is the same! Cornish recipes will do - if Devon can't give up its secrets! Thanks, Jan Jones in Canada

6. Re: [DEV] Ilsington Parish? [1]
Hi Gary: I'm not familiar with the parish myself, but have noted that (as you have perhaps already checked for yourself) in the GENUKI/Devon Ilsington page there is a citation to "The book of Ilsington", with an index, that evidently contains some mention of this place and family. And the parish has an OPC, Audrey Fawn. cheers Brian Randell >Dear List, > >Could I speak to someone familiar with the history of the Ilsington Parish. >I am trying to find out about the Bagtor Estate. > >Gary > > >===
7. [DEV] Bernard/Jury [1]
Just checking in as a newcomer (actually, I was a subscriber several years ago, but went off tracking other lines). My Devon line is William Bernard/Burnard/Burnett who immigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1839 with his wife Mary (nee Jury/Jewry) and his 7 year old son. The William and Mary marriage is listed 31 OCT 1833 in the Bradford Church records, but I have not confirmed that IGI listing. The son, also named William, lived to be 107 and was quite consistent in stating the immigration from Devonshir

9. [DEV] Robert FROSTE/Elizabeth POLE, Moretonhampstead [1]
I have undertaken a project to link all the FROST families from Moretonhampstead. The marriage information from the Moretonhampstead site shows the earliest marriage as that of Roberte FROST to Elizabeth POLE, 7 December 1648. They do not appear to have baptised children at Moretonhampstead. I am also to find where my first known FROST ancestor Ambrose FROST, came from and perhaps Roberte may have been his brother. Ambrose's apparent first child, Agnise, was baptised at MH, 13 May 1637, so Ambrose an
10. [DEV] ST LUKES COLLEGE, EXETER TRAINING COLLEGE [1]
Hello all, My Grand Father Frederick Charles HARRIS was listed as a Student at Exeter Training College on the 1891 Census. I have been told that there may be some "Old Boys" publications around. One from 1915 certainly refers to him specifically. Can any one help? Phil Harris, Leigh on Sea, Essex
11. RE: [DEV] NEW SEARCH - ARTHUR T HARRIS - TORMOHAM WITH TORQUAY [1]
David, If it helps, it looks like 1 Summerfield Terr. to me as well. Also Arthur looks like Arthur S. Harris to me judging by the similarity with the S in the Sarah's earlier in the page. 13. [DEV] SNELL, BOLT, ALFORD /HALFORD [1]
Hi Lora and Diana Thanks to both of you for your messages. Like Lora's Halfords mine were also Alford's who changed to Halford, so I'm sure there has to be a connection and hope we'll be able to find it. I found my Halford family at North Tawton on the 1881 census - Richard and Sarah Ann (nee Turner) with the children they'd had to date. When eventually I found a marriage for them (verified} I discovered that Richard had been born an Alford. Somewhere between his marriage 1868 and the 1881 census Richard h

15. [DEV] Food [1]
Hi folks, Food is important to genealogy. Favorite foods reflect our origins. My maternal grandmother had special recipes for foods that were reflections of her ancestors from Va. and Scotland. My maternal grandfather liked certain foods from New England. I was an educator for 31 years. I used to get my students to write compositions about family events for various seasons. When I read the menu for a seasonal dinner I could get a very good idea of the race and places of origin of the students'

Nicki, There were PALKs in Wilmslow, Cheshire in the 1890s ( and still today) which probably have Devon roots. Does anyone happen to know what a platelayes is? This is an occupation listed in the 1901 census for a Devon born resident living in Wales. The person concerned was a mason's labourer before moving to Wales (1890 roughly). Thanks Steve and Sandy Snow

24. [DEV] Morpeth [1]
Thanks to those of you who responded to my question about where in Devon I might find Morpeth, ( and then hopefully an ancestor). As usual, one question leads to two more in this hobby, so now instead of searching for a Morpeth in Devon, which didn't exist, I can spend my time searching for my ancestor in either Morebath in Devon, or Morpeth in Northumberland. That sounds like double the work to me :) :) Onward, onward. Anne
25. [DEV] Re "The Blizzard In The West March 1891" [1]
Hi! In the preface of the above titled book it states the work was undertaken in response to a generally expressed desire on the part of a large number of residents in the Western Counties. It would have been impossible to compile the work, imperfect as it is, without the assistance and co-operation of the editor and staff of the Western Morning News.Assistance was also kindly rendered by the editor and staff of the Wetern Daily Mercury. The book might be obtainable by order from local libraries, I don't
