Hello all Volunteers (*and* Potential Volunteers !!), Newsletter No. 3 ------------------------ I have some good and interesting news to impart, but I shall be also writing to each volunteer individually, in the next day or so, to follow up on some aspects of this news. (1) The LDS have given this project the O.K. to have the 1891 Census for Devon on loan for up to 2 years. The consequences of this are: (a) that the use of microfiche will be free for the term of the project - I shall send fiche to each vo

5. Re: Hello All, researching WARREN's in Devon [1]
Hi Chad; I have sent money via an international money order. You go to your local US Post Office and they can sell you a voucher, which you fill out and send to an address in St. Louis. There they convert it and send a check in pounds sterling. In January, the charge was $7.50 per check. This method is cheaper than a bank, but since the conversion isn't done the day you get the check, you can't be sure exactly how many pounds they will get. You can only estimate. You can get a sterling check from a
6. Drake's Drum [0.975191]
Dear Theresa You can find the poem on a web-page of the poet who wrote it, Sir Henry Newbolt. I copy it below for convenience. I too originate from Plymouth, and was taught at school that Drake was a hero, but at home (by my Dutch father) that he was a villain. Certainly the fact that he was in Nombre Dios Bay had something to do with the slave trade.... Best wishes Stephanie Drake's Drum Drake he's in his hammock an' a thousand mile away, (Capten, art tha sleepin' there below?) Sl

Hi all, Could SKS please see if they are able to find Samuel Asworthy (Axworthy?) Jackson. He married Mary POWER in 1828 on the 13th December. 12. Re: BMD on line [0.975191]
Yes I have! There seems to be a lot of records for 1847 and I was lucky that I had two relevant marriages that year. One great advantage of the index still being small is that you can search just by surname and registration district without getting too large a response. I then downloaded an application form and sent off for my certificates which arrived within a few weeks. Ruth Wilson -----Original Message----- From: m020xj00@cwcom.net To: DEVON-L@rootsweb.com Dat

Dear Laura Multiply by the "tourist" exchange rate, which tonight was $1.569 per pound sterling. #8.50 x 1.569 = $13.33 Now comes the difficult bit - you must add in your bank's commission to this - easier to pay by credit card! regards Frank Skinner ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: 3 August 1999 16:10 Subject: Off topic question > Hi listers, > > I was hoping someone in the UK could tell me how much 8.50 > in UKPounds is in U.S. currency? 14. RWV Yard?? [0.975191]
Dear listers, Many occupations in the 1851 census refer to 'RWV Yard'. From GENUKI, I gather that this refers to the Royal William Victualling Yard, East Stonehouse, Plymouth. Can any of you tell me more about it? What IS a victualling yard? 15. St.Sidwell [0.975191]
St Sidwell is a district just outside the old city walls of Exeter. It was called that after the parish church which was dedicated to St.Sidwell. Regretably the church was destroyed by German bombing in May 1942. During the siege of Exeter by the Cornish(and other) rebels at the time of the 1549 Prayer Book Rebellion the tower of the church was a refuge for Walter Raleigh Sr. and several others incl.one of my ancestors. Hi Annette, I don't know if there may be a connection or not but I do have some EVELEIGH'S in one of my lines from Devon. Perhaps they may tie into your line somehow. I don't know how common the EVELEIGH surname is in Devon but I have a MARY EVELEIGH that married a WILLIAM MILLER one April 7, 1828. Their son, WILLIAM GEORGE EVELEIGH MILLER was baptized September 18, 1829 in Lower Brixham. He married SELENA LAVIS. She was born January 13, 1828 in Paighton, Devon and she was the daughter of JAMES
21. Re: HANCOCK/MITCHELL Surnames [0.975191]
Malinda, There are 708 HANCOCKs and 132 HANDCOCKs in the 1851 census for Devon. HANCOCK was the 135th most common surname in Devon at that time (out of a total of 27,656 different surnames!) so yes, it is was quite common. MITCHELL was very common with 1248 MITCHELLs, 250 MITCHELs and quite a few other variations as well in the 1851 census. MITCHELL was the 41st most common surname in Devon at that time > I've been told that the Hancock surname was very prevalent in > Devon and wondered if that was
