1. New subscriber - William Scoble BROWN [1]
Hello list, I am a new subsriber to this list after finding an extremely elusive ancester after several years of searching! I am hoping for some help in finding a birth for William Scoble BROWN - I have found him on the 1901 Census age 32, b.Modbury Devon. I am having problems finding a marriage for his parents - John Scoble Brown b.1845 Modbury, Devon, he married "Ann", b. 1841 Buckland Devon. In 1881 they were living at Burns Place,Devon. Their youngest child William, was born 1869. Is there an access
2. RE: The mark of....... [1]
Hi Kevin and all Undertaking transcriptions as a hobby I have seen many hundreds of "marks" and in my opinion the greatest majority have been made by the person concerned with varying degrees of difficulty... Having said that it is surprising how those marks become clearer and more sophisticated over time, I recall a sexton whose mark was a splotch of ink originally and as years went by it turned into his initials and then a signature (time frame about 20 years) I personally believe that nearly all mark
3. Re: [DEV] JUTSUM children in West Buckland (Devon) [1]
Yes indeed according to the transcriptions you pointed out, some of the JUTSUM's I was looking for died in West Buckland, Somerset. There's also Grace born in 1778. Since Ralph was married to Elizabeth Norrish in 1763, there surely must have been more children, but where were they born? Thanks, anyway Paul On Thursday 28 Oct 2004 19:36, NorthDevonRendle wrote: > Paul, > > You could try the Somerset Genuki for West Buckland. > > http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/SOM/WestBuckland/index.html > > There a
4. 1871 CENSUS lookup request [1]
Please can SKS with access to the 1871 Plymouth census help me out. Mary Ann PIPER was living at 33 Richmond Street, Plymouth at the time of her death on 24th April 1871. The informant for her death was T PIPER, also residing there, but the certificate didn't give a relationship. She was the widow of John Eastman Piper, who is a brother of Richard Eastman Piper, my 3xgt grandfather. Is it also possible to ask to look for Richard William Eastman Piper (born Exeter 1836) and his wife Lousia Ellen (bor

Dear All, I have not received mail for a while either but subscribe to Somerset and this is the message from 3/11/2004. I suppose we follow the instructions or just wait to see what happens. 7. Re: The mark of....... [1]
Yes, I have often seen the "mark" somewhat personalized. Usually it is their initial, sometimes with added flourishes. They often branded their cattle with a specialized initial, too, and perhaps it was the same as the mark they made on a document. If they learned to write any letters, they would be their initials. Also, people sometimes could write their name but chose (or were told) to make a mark. Often old people made a mark whereas earlier in life they had written their name..... probably because

15. Brook-Glanville [1]
Dear Listers We were pleased to have two replies recently regarding the Brook -Glanville side of our family, but haven't traced back as far as c1700 as those who contacted us have. As far as we know our William Glanville family was in Bowton (Torquay ) in 1881 and the mother was Elizabeth. Daughter Ellen married our James Hanbury in1905. On their marriage certificate, she is named as Ellen Brook-Glanville. We believe that Ellen's sister Rose/Rosa Glanville died in Florence, Italy. We'd love to find out
16. Re: [DEV] Howard 1841 [1]
Joan, I have a Maria HOWARD who married a Daniel FROST in 1863 in North Bovey, she was 22 and her father was John. Maria was b. 1840 in Drewsteignton and her mother was Mary formerly BOND. She had a sister Jane who was b. 1826. also in Drewsteignton. I have wondered if Jane's mother died and he married Mary, due to the age difference between the girls. I haven't done any research on the family but maybe in the next couple of days I will try and find out more if you think we have a match! Best wishes, Jack
17. 1871 Census - Stonehouse [1]
Dear Listers, Can SKS help, please as my health does not now permit a visit to the local LDS Family History Centre to look it up for myself? My great grandfather, WILLIAM RUTHERFORD born 1851 (ot thereabouts) was a Plymouth Division Royal Marine whom I am 90% certain was in the Marine Barracks, Durnsford Street for the 1871 Census. I am keen to know if any indication is given as to his place of birth - more than just 'Scotland' (as shown in 1881 Census). TIA! Peter Rutherford Norwich UK

23. Re: [DEV] marriage at Littlehaven, help please [1]
Not an easy one. Not in Devon ..... I think there are 3 Littlehavens or Little Havens: one near Horsham in Sussex, and one in Tyneside (Northumberland), neither of them parishes, as far as I can find out. The third is Little Haven on the west coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales, where there were at least two nonconformist chapels in the 19th century. So -- try another mailing list! 25. Carpenter, Chinnick, Radford [1]
I am trying to sort out a brick wall. I am researching George Carpenter who I think was a baker in Devon. He married Sarah Radford (Hadford) around 1862 she may have been married before with the name Chinnick the copy is not too clear. They had a boy called George 1869 in Plympton. If anybody can shed any light no matter how small on Sarah's family or Georges date of birth I would be grateful as I am going around in circles. Thank you and kind regards Kathy
