arj files are compressed files so you need to uncompress or unzip them with
a special program. I think at the top of the list there may be an unzipper
you can download, but I'm not sure (someone else on one list found it).
I've just bought a program from the shop called ZipMagic put out by the
Mijenix Corporation, very easy to install and I think it will be well worth
it when I look at all the marriage witness indexes and census info on the
site.

Hi Linda
You need WINZIP or ARJ.EXE to decompress ARJ files. Best to make a separate
directory and copy the files there so you don't get them mixed with other
files.

Well I've lurked for a while so I thought it was now time to post. I'm
currently researching the HUTCHINGS family, Burton Bradstock, Bridport
and Poole. The one person I'm most anxious to find more information on
is my 4x Grandfather Henry HUTCHINGS who in 1841 was living in Burton
Bradstock along with Jane (WHITTLE) Hutchings, both aged 30 and the
following children...
Richard, Benjamin (my 3x Grandfather) and Jane.

I'm looking for information about the GARLAND family of Owermoigne in the
early 1800s. The father was said to be Charles, a baker, and the mother
Betsey.
They had 7 boys and 3 girls. Daughter Elizabeth married William Penney in
1819. Son Thomas, a dairyman, married Jane Marsh in 1830. Another son was
probably named Jeremiah. These three siblings left England in 1845 for
Wisconsin Territory, USA.
Using church records and the 1851 census of Dorset, I think the following

Hi everyone
I have just joined Dorset-L and following the welcome message thought I would
take the plunge and introduce myself.
I only took up this hobby in February 1997 so I am still at the early stages
of my research - since May 1997 I have posted my surname interests on many
lists and can report immense success having found two fourth cousins in
different branches - exchanging info with these people and many others on the

Hello all,
I'm a newcomer to this list but I also subscribe to the Isle of Wight
list where most of my family's origins are. However, I was a resident of
Wimborne Minster and Merley throughout my childhood.
Long before my time, other members of the URRY family are known to have
settled in Dorset and I would be grateful if any of you could help me
to find traces of them.
The principle areas where they seem to have settled are Dorchester,
Christchurch, Wimborne, Weymouth, Witchampton and Tarrant Monkton. Of
I hope I helped some of you with the Register, now would you be kind and look at your trees for me.

Have you read the book by Chuk. I understand that this author is from around
your part of the ocean (rather than the waters of the England). She wrote the
book entitled "The Somerset Years." The book is very informative, as well as
names of passengers who travelled from England to Australia etc.

According to the Ordnance Survey, Camesworth is in Dorset at GridReference
SY4797, which places it between Bradpole and Waytown, just to the north of
Bridport in West Dorset.
Although to small to be named, a map can be found at:-

Hello Marilyn, Iain et al!
Wondering if, in your FRY families, either of you have come
across Thomas FRY, a market gardener who lived at 15 Bevis St,
Southampton in the late 1800's. His daughter Ellen FRY married
Frederick STONE in 1890.
Thanks,

A gentleman from Newfoundland suggested that my ancestor, Ann Huxford,
may have come from Dorset to Newfoundland. On 3 April 1754 she married
William Gerrard in Christchurch. At the time of her marriage she was
listed as being from Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. William was
reportedly from Ince, Lancashire. The Newfie gentleman thinks the name
may have been corrupted to Huxter. Can anyone offer any help?
Sincerely,

Hello everyone. I've recently subscribed to the DORSET-L mailing list and
thought it was about time I posted my first message to the group.
My chief genealogical interest in Dorset is the surname JESTY and the
villages of YETMINSTER and WORTH MATRAVERS.
I am particularly interested in one of my ancestors, Benjamin Jesty
(1737-1816) who the Lancet medical journal credits as the first known
person to undertake smallpox vaccination (in 1774, some 22 years before
Edward Jenner).
I would be very interested to
