In-Reply-To: <38.25ca73e.25dfdaf1@aol.com> I'm afraid I can't help you, since there isn't a single BILES in my records - which, actually, is a bit odd, because it's a common enough Dorset name! Regards, -=Will Stevens=- wstevens@cix.co.uk
6. Shave surname 1891 [0.978193]
Hello Hoping that someone has come across William J SHAVE and his wife Mary somewhere in Dorset in 1891. If anyone has access to any index for the 1891 census, it would be very much appreciated if they could have a quick look. We need to find Mary's place of birth to enable identification on the 1881. Both would have been aged about 25. Swanage area where they were living in 1892 has been checked, but Blandford is a strong possibility.Thank you - Alison Alison@la-vine.fsnet.co.uk

Lynda; I appreciate the offer of the ROSSITER look-up but I can't say for certain that they were in those towns. Some of their wives came from there, I think. I'm sure that you will have enough others to look for. If you see the ROSSITER name in passing please make note of it, otherwise, don't bother. Thank you again for your kindness in offering to do this. Best regards, Ann Peters petersw@primeline.net
8. Re: PEARCE [0.978193]
Hi, Karen: I have an Margery PIERCE who was born in 1575 in Fordington, St. George, Dorset. I believe we may be talking about the same family, as there is no assurance the "ierce" is the correct lettering to follow the "P." Margery married a Captain Anthony EAMES who was born in the same location. This is all old information and may not be entirely valid. Do you know more? Wish I had more. Also researching SPRAGUE, BREWSTER, HOLLAND and HOLBROOK in the same time/area Regards, Peter KAREN SIMPSON wrote:

Hello, Now that I have found the Patten family I was looking for in Portland and Chesil Dorset, I am curious about apprenticeships and if there are lists for them? In particular the mason apprentices? I also wonder if anyone knows about church records, cemetery records, family histories for Dorset accessible online? I have listed my surname interests as PATTEN early 1800's, and now the WHITE family there in Portland and Chesil, Dorset. Leemae

Hi Gordon: Thankyou for your offer but as you see Helen has kindly filled in the MI's for me. If you get a chance maybe you could look up a death for me. Hello Lynda I am researching the STILL/STEEL families in and around Wimborne, in particular Seth STEEL who, until his marriage in 1879 to Emily HOMER was known as Seth COWARD. The COWARD family lived in Ringwood Road Hampreston. His mother Jane Steel was the daughter of Moses STILL of Verwood. It would appear that Seth was not the son of John Coward as shown on early census records, and perhaps his name might appear in the Parish Chest. I have a lot of STILL/STEEL names taken from all available census and

I may well be teaching granny to suck eggs here, but the Birmingham and Midland Society (BMSGH) run a Link scheme which encourages this on a semi-formalised basis. They have a coordinator who will offer a suggestion of someone on her books if she has one with an estimate of any expenses. Then it is a matter of contact between requestor and link to see if what is wanted can be accomplished. There can be no guarantee that there will be a suitable link and the service is only available to BMSGH members. Perso

Hello Listers, Firstly I would like to apologise to all those to whom this doesn't apply, basically that's anyone outside the UK. Sorry, but what I have found can't be found any where else but here. And secondly, I will apologise to all those who already knew. If you have teletext on your TV, turn to Channel 4 and dial up page 489. This is a family tree page, I found it last night. Hi Pete, non-hacker descendant of an Acker, Probably a useless piece of information for you. While transcribing late 18C records of Dorset, I have frequently come across 'Ackers' where we would normally write 'Acres', eg 'Ten Ackers Field' or 'so-much seed per acker'. It therefore looks as if this was the Dorset pronunciation in action. or possibly of the West Country as a whole. Similarly, the surnames Acreman, Akreman, Akerman and Ackerman are completely interchangeable. Diana >>hackers caus
