In Hampshire, next door, ther are entries for CLAVELE in Portsea; CLAVELL in Binstead, Ryde; CLAVELLE in Northwood, Whippingham; and CLAWELL in St Nicho

10. Address on postings [1]
One plea to some of you. I'm sure it would help some of us if you could indicate your town/country in the sig. line of your messages. Since email is so international, it is sometime difficult to determine where people are writing from, and hence how much information they need. Not the whole address, just town and country. Just a thought. Flame me, trash my message, remove my name from the list if you don't like the idea :) John John Hebley Voice: (972) 866-8879 Dallas, TX

Dear All, I am looking for details of an ancestor, JOHN SCADDING. Both of his birth in Devon and of his married life in Dorset. He might have been born as late as 1719 in Hemyock, Devon. He was a Cordwainer (shoemaker) of Hemyock when, in 1739, he took out a special license to marry HANNAH (Catherine) BARNES/BAINS of Semsbury, Dorset(Symondsbury). 14. Tolpuddle Lovelesses [1]
Hello Irene ! Loveless is/was quite a common name in some parts of Dorset. First you should try and get some details of your own family - names, baptism dates and places before finding a possible ancestor who lived years ago. I think only one Loveless was a martyr, and he may possibly have been one of those who returned to Dorset. A friend of mine recently found a churchyard - in Essex, I think, where many of the returned martyrs were buried. I think the martyrs are well-documented. I

Hi Karen, I have recently invested in a book called Dorset Smugglers by Roger Guttridge ISBN 0 90212990 2 having borrowed it from my local library first and being very impressed. This book is based on actual records, and gives a vivid account of smuggling in the county, and at the back it has a "smugglers Roll Call" with a list of all smugglers convicted in Dorset. I gather f

21. What are these? [1]
The Middle Temple is one of the four inns of court. With the Inner Temple it is situated on the edge of the City of London. All English barristers are members or one or other of the inns, but they do not necessarily practise from chambers situated in their own inn. Traditionally their function has been to train and exercise disciplinary functions over members of the Bar, but their practical role in each of these two regards is now somewhat lessened. The Temple was formerly occupied, as might be expected
22. Weymouth Harbour [1]
Can anyone give me details (or recommend one if there are lots :-} ) of a book that is written about Weymouth Harbour and the boats working out of it in the period 1750 - 1850. In particular I am interested in more information about a private ship of war The Intrepid which captured a square sterned sloop by the name of Betsey sometime around 1800, and also several other sloops which might have been involved in smuggling operations. Thanks in advance Sheelagh
