Ann,
For a number of years now I have depended on the kindness of strangers for
help in tracking down our ancestors, and almost to a person those strangers
have gone way beyond simple kindness. I feel a great obligation to somehow
pay back. You are helping me to do some of that. Reimbursement is
unnecessary, thank you though. We currently have the grandchildren with us
for the weekend, and unfortunately it may be early next week before I
assemble a packet for you. If for some reason you do not receiv

Ann,
There is a Glouster Lodge on the Esplanade (along the beach) in Weymouth.
It now contains ten or twelve condominiun or cooperative-type apartments.
It was previously the Glouster Hotel, in fact one of my wife's ancestors
was employed there before the turn of the century. If I remember
correctly, it was built originally by the Duke of Glouster as a private
summer residence and hosted many of the nobility, up to and including the
King and his family.
If this is the place, I think you will get several
Ann,
My wife and I were in Weymouth at the end of May this year, and brought
home some books on the area. I got a chance to glance over them this
afternoon and found two old photos of Gloucester Hotel/Lodge, and some text
describing its history. Among our own photos there is also a picture of
the building. I will be glad to send you copies of this material via snail
mail if you would like. Please contact me individually with your mailing
address and I will get a packet in the mail to you.

I would be interested in knowing more about Damory Court. Was this a
manor, a chapelry, a parish? Is/was it near Blandford Forum? I do not
see it on a list of Dorset parishes. I am interested because it was part
of a return address on a letter written about 1906.
Thank you.

The former Chedington Parish Church is now a private dwellinghouse and
there is no public access to the garden.
I believe that Chedington is the spelling now normally used, but
Cheddington was formerly common.

Hello Fellow Listers,
Is there by chance anyone out there with access to old copies of Crockfords who can look up for me the details of Revd Nathan (or perhaps Nathaniel) Haysom, 1840 - 1923?

I have recently started to compile information on my family history and
with much help from sources on the internet I have established that my

Thank you very much for posting this very interesting petition & list of
names, Thomas.
At the end you say that "The above names were rearranged in alphabetical
order by me and surnames spelled properly where possible."
No problems with your alphabetical order but I see that you have renamed the
2 Kates as Keats. My East Lulworth ancestors used the spelling Cates - and
occasionally Kates - from 1698 to 1742. I have yet to discover any of that
family spelled Keats.
I should be very interested in any link

The book, Dorset Smugglers, by Roger Gutteridge, shows the following
listings for Spencers:
Thomas Spencer of Hamble, Hampshire, servant, 1816 age 22, smuggling, no

It also details a rather long story about an encounter on Boscombe beach in
1767 when a crew of and armed cutter, the Anson, attempted to sieze part of
a cargo consisting of three tons of tea. It mentions a gunner on the Anson,
James Spencer, being "very much bruised abo
Hi Eileen,
The Dorchester Record Office has a good collection of abstracted
information from parish records, which would be my first stop, before I
went to the parishes. They also have maps to help you locate them. There
is some distance between the parishes. A driving map will help you locate
Bere Regis and Sturminster Marshall. The DRO has a collection of the
S&DFHS census abstracts, all the Dorset census (1841-1891) records on
microfiche, parish records on microfiche and lots of other goodies.

I have recently obtained the 5 CDs containing the above. They are good
value at US$15. Inevitably, none of my ancestors seem to be in the records,
which are mainly based on BT's, and are also incomplete.
IGI entries are not necessarily included on the VRIs. There are some
non-conformist records included.
I am willing to do limited look-ups for the Dorset list. Please don't swamp
me! Not all Dorset parishes are covered, but there is a list of those that
appear at http://home.sprynet.com/~btomp/ldsc

Hi Rosalene
I have a book called 'The Book Of Blandford Forum' which has quite a few old
photo's of Blandford in the 1800's and I could scan some and send them to
you if you like. Do you know your ancestors trade or occupation and I may
be able to see if they are mentioned in it.
