This really is genealogy.
We recently bought two video tapes in Weymouth, Dorset, the town where
Lorene's grandmother was born. The people in the Tourist Information
Center on the Esplanade were not sure, but they thought the tapes would
play on our VCR here in the States. One of the tapes has a label, "VHS
HI-FI SOUND PAL."
On our VCR, we only get video snow. On one of the tapes the audio runs too
slow, giving out a sort of growl. On the other tape the audio runs too
fast, but is mostly legible.

Ralph,
Thank you for your reply. You apparently are very skilled or very lucky,
based on the other comments. Wonder what two systems were invloved.

Greetings Dorset researchers
A few years ago I got from the PRO a photocopy of the page 9 of the return
for 1851 census Leigh, Dorset which covered my family. I have just realized
that it doesn't give where they were born. Was that question not asked in
the 1851 census or have I missed a column? The family is
Eliza ANDREWS Head; Widow; 44; retired shopkeeper
Elizabeth`ANDREWS Dau;U;20.
Eliza ANDREWS Dau; U;15.
Georgina ANDREWS Dau;U;9.
I know place of birth is given in the 1861 census but unfortunately
I am seeking a George PIKE or PYKE (born c 1823) who was an immigrant on
the Sir William Napier in Aug 1842 from London and Plymouth arriving late
Nov 1842 in Hobart, Tasmania. Also on the boat was my ggg aunt Ann REED of
Illogan,Cornwall whom he married in Hobart 3rd March 1843. On the marriage
entry he is described as underage and a blacksmith and the spelling was PYKE.
She was a witness at her sister's marriage in Aug 1843 but from there I
have lost them and wonder if they returned to England. If you s
Greetings from Canada:
I need some help re Parish Records around 1829. My g.grandfather,
George Bush was born in either Cranborne or Fordingbridge in 1829.
According to his marriage record his father's name was James (he was a
miller). We cannot find, in any LDS records available to us, a James with a
son George. My sister is going to the UK in 3 weeks and I'm wondering if
there are Parish records that the LDS haven't recorded yet and if so where
would she look for them? Any assistance would be greatly

Hi fellow listers,
I have a request from a friend without a computer regarding two of her
relatives.
Can anyone give me any info on Joseph Oxford who married Martha Addams
supposedly 7/2/1805 at Milton Abbass. Martha was born around 1773 but
Joseph's dob is unknown.
Any info is most welcome especially a marriage date and possibly Joseph's dob.
Cheers, Chris.
Hi Debs I think a lot of us are waiting for an answer to your question on
downloading indexes thanks for asking what many wanted to ask.

It's funny but, I always assumed that my Hallett/Harris couple were born and
wed in Dorset, because they lived as a couple there and died there. Their
oldest daughter born Carrie Louise Hallett on September 28, 1886 and born in
Bournemouth. It came as a surprise to me that in the Hampshire census James
Hallett gave his place of birth as Fordingbridge, Hants, in 1860. His wife
Margaret Lavinia Harris (dau. of Jas. Harris of Christchurch, Hants, and
Caroline Harris of Fordingbridge, Hants.) was born in Hold

I doubt that "others" will be listed as they would have had to have
their own "property rights" to be entitled to vote and therefore to be
included - I understand that they were normally only printed (as
commercial ventures) after the election when everyone could then see
how others had voted - ie they only listed t

Hi
Missed the original message but is someone researching Bungay/Chalk in
Downton? Not sure if it is you Thomas, or whether you are responding to part
of a message posted by someone else. If you are, I can't find the original
message!
Anyway, I have Downton Chalks and Bungays and have some information to
share - although both names were very common in the village. Light is
another associated name.
Have you been in contact with Gracie Bungy who runs the one name study. I

I am having some difficulty in finding the brith date for my g grandfather Harry Pomeroy
I think he was born c1863 probably Bridport, possibly at North Allington. I know he married Eva Angelina Guppy (b1863 East Coker) in Guernsey and died in a train crash in London 1890. They had a (in Guernsey) daughter (my grandmother Virtue Eva Pomeroy in 1886) they do not appear in the 1881 1891 census for Guernsey
In 1881 he was in the services.
I have a hunch he was born of Robert Pomeroy and Mary nee Pitcher.
Hi,
Thought I would add my two cents to the VHS tape discussion. Europe
generally operates on a 220 volt, 50Hz power system. North American
power system operates on a 110 volt, 60Hz power system. The difference
of 10Hz in the frequency of the alternating current presents problems
for electric motor-driven devices because the motor speed is usually set
as a multiple of the frequency. This means that the tape is recorded at
one speed and is being played at a different speed, not a good
situation. I rather

Tony,
I was interested to read your message to Roger Cleal as I believe I have
Peach's in my family. George Legg married Ann Peach 1795 in North Poorton.
Her father was John Peach possibly from Rampisham.
Any connections?
